Flights to New Zealand are great ideas, for thee who wishes to fly to the great long cloud of an island that is New Zealand. New Zealand is a place where many like to fly to, some for holidays, som e to watch rugby, some to see relatives or friends, and some to see the capital, or the wildlife, or the countryside famed in Lord of the Rings. There are 113 airports in New Zealand (2002 est.). The main international airport is Auckland Airport, which handled about 11 million passengers in 2005. Christchurch Airport and Wellington Airport each handle about 4 million passengers per year. Many love to fly via many airlines, to New Zealand, to Christchurch, Wellington, North Island, and South island, Christchurch International Airport (IATA: CHC, ICAO: NZCH) is the main airport that serves Christchurch, New Zealand. It is located 12 kilometres to the northwest of the city centre, in the suburb of Harewood, and was opened in 1953. The primary runway is oriented near perpendicular to Canterbury's Nor'wester foehn wind. For this reason, the secondary runway is a cross-runway (at a right angle to the primary runway), and is used during Nor'westers by all aircraft up to and including Boeing 767's; USAF C-17 Globemaster III have also been known to use this runway in extreme conditions. Garden City Helicopters operates from a base adjacent to the airport. They have a medivac service using fixed wing aircraft and also operate the rescue helicopter in Canterbury with a secondary helipad in Hagley Park adjacent to Christchurch Hospital (ICAO: NZJC). Christchurch Helicopters also operate from the western side of the airfield, next to Canterbury Aero Club, which maintains a grass runway parallel to the primary runway. Due to increasing passenger numbers, the airport has begun construction on a new terminal upgrade costing over $200 million. The new construction is scheduled for completion in 2011, with some work such as demolition continuing until 2012 Auckland Airport (formerly Auckland International Airport) (IATA: AKL, ICAO: NZAA) is the largest and busiest airport in New Zealand with over 13 million (some 7 million international and 6 million domestic) passengers a year, expected to more than double by 2025. The airport is in Mangere, a western suburb of Manukau City, and is 21 km south of Auckland City centre. It is the central hub for Air New Zealand. Auckland Airport is one of New Zealands most important infrastructure assets, providing thousands of jobs for the region, and is the countrys second-largest cargo 'port' by value, contributing around $14 billion to the economy, and catering for over four million visitors each year, resulting in a 70% share of New Zealand's international travellers. The airport is the fourth busiest in Australasia after Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane airports. However, internationally, the airport is the second busiest in Australasia, being a third busier than Melbourne Airport in terms of international passengers. The airport has also been rated in the top 3 worldwide for airports handling 5-15 million passengers annually. It has a capacity of about 45 flight movements per hour, using a single runway which is fully Cat IIIb capable (at a reduced rate of movements). A close by taxiway was upgraded for use as a runway when the main runway requires maintenance or for use during emergencies, but it does not have sufficient separation distance to operate simultaneously with the main runway. In November 2007 work began on a new northern runway, to be built in several stages and to be used mainly by smaller airplanes, freeing up capacity on the main runway. Wellington International Airport (IATA: WLG, ICAO: NZWN) (used to be called Rongotai Airport) is on the Rongotai isthmus, 7 km southeast of central Wellington, New Zealand's capital city. It is a major domestic hub, and has links to the major cities of Australia. In 2005 it served 4.6 million passengers, and currently over 5 million passengers. The airport in recent months has experienced phenomenal growth rates (around 22%). As at the year to date (YTD) May 2008, 5,177,634 passengers passed through the airport, an increase of over 500,000 from the same time in the previous year. The airport occupies 110 hectares, a small area for the number of passengers it handles.
