Flights to Rome are great ideas for those of us who wish to fly to Rome. In the past people may have marched in legions, or walked to Rome, as all roads lead to Rome, so the saying goers, in a sense all airays do too, and to everywhere, though not so much as they did in the Roman era, just all leading there. Some may fly to Rome to see the sites, or the Pope, or to see politicians, or businessmen there. Some may be there to see family, Rome is also served by three airports. The intercontinental Leonardo Da Vinci International Airport is Italy's chief airport and is more commonly known as "Fiumicino Airport", as it is located within the nearby Commune of Fiumicino, south-west of Rome. The older Rome Ciampino Airport is a joint civilian and military airport. It is more commonly referred to as "Ciampino Airport", as it is located beside Ciampino, south-east of Rome. A third airport, the Aeroporto dell'Urbe, is a small, low-traffic airport located about 6 km north of the city centre, which handles most helicopter and private flights. Leonardo da Vinci-Fiumicino Airport ( Italian: Aeroporto Leonardo da Vinci di Fiumicino ) (IATA: FCO, ICAO: LIRF), also commonly known as Fiumicino Airport, is Italy's largest airport and second-largest international air gateway, with 35,945,223 passengers served in 2007, located in Fiumicino, 18.9 NM (35.0 km; 21.7 mi) from Rome's historic city centre. Fiumicino Airport is the sole hub for Alitalia. Some fly to Rome, to go to other parts of Italy, and some do, as of stop overs, or as only Italy has flights there. Some may go there at is quicker or cheaper than other ways. Some may fly to Rome, to see a opera, or a football match, or maybe the starling twho fly in millions above the eternal city. Some fly to Rome, to see the Catholic things. There are many things to see in Rome, and many come here to Rome itself, in planes, helicopters, balloons, gliders, and more. Lenardo may have invented wings for people to fly here. So many fly to Rome. Security Services transferred from the Polizia di Stato to Aeroporti di Roma in 2000. Aeroporti di Roma created Airport Security (100%-owned) to provide these services as well as security services to airlines (in competition with other security companies such as IVRI). Airport Security is supervised by Polizia di Stato (Italian State Police), Guardia di Finanza (Italian Customs Police), Ente Nazionale Aviazione Civile (Italy's Civil Aviation Authority) and Aeroporti di Roma. Rome Ciampino Airport (Italian: Aeroporto di Roma-Ciampino or Giovan Battista Pastine Airport) (IATA: CIA, ICAO: LIRA) is a joint civilian, commercial and military airport near Rome in Italy. The airport is situated 15 km southeast of central Rome, just outside the Greater Ring Road (Italian: Grande Raccordo Anulare or GRA) the circular motorway around the city. Ciampino airport was opened in 1916 and is one of the oldest airports still in operations. It was Rome's main airport until 1960, with traffic amounting to over 2 million passengers per year. Since the opening of Leonardo Da Vinci International Airport in Fiumicino, Ciampino has been handling almost exclusively charter and executive flights. After decades of stagnation in scheduled traffic, low-cost carriers have boosted Ciampino; it is now one of the busiest and fastest growing airports in Italy. Passenger traffic in 2007 was 5,402,000 (9,24% up from 2006; 2006 itself had seen an increase of 16,75% compared to 2005). Traffic has grown so much that noise complaints are now forcing the Italian Ministry of Transport to look for a third airport for Rome, which could take over some part of the excess traffic of Ciampino. In November 2007, it was decided that Rome Viterbo Airport will become Rome's third commercial airport. The terminals were extended at the beginning of 2007.
