Established originally in 1849 as a protective Army outpost situated on a bluff overlooking the Trinity River, the city of Fort Worth today still embraces its western heritage and traditional architecture and design more than its more contemporary neighbor, Dallas.
A large storage dam was built in 1913 on the West Fork of the Trinity River, 7 miles from the city. The lake formed by this dam is known as Lake Worth. The cost of the dam was nearly US$1,500,000 - a handsome sum at the time.

Lake Worth is a man-made lake in Texas. It was built in 1914 as a reservoir and for recreation. The lake is controlled by the City of Fort Worth Lake Worth Management Office. The lake has a moderate fluctuation with stained clarity. Submerged vegetation is sparse. There are shallow flats covered with cattails and other emergent species.
When first impounded, Lake Worth provided boating and recreation that drew people from throughout the North Texas area. Over the decades, the lake was neglected and fell out of favor. With the current growth of Fort Worth engulfing the Lake Worth area, the lake and its parks are finding new popularity with the growing community. The Lake Worth monster, also known as the Goatman, is a North American cryptid reported to live in Lake Worth, Texas. So the Loch Ness Monster is maybe a buddy of it.
The Trinity River is a river that flows entirely within the USA state of Texas. It rises in extreme north Texas, a few miles south of the Red River. Its headwaters are separated from the Red River basin by the high bluffs on the south side of the Red River. Sieur de LaSalle in 1687 called the stream the "River of Canoes". The name "Trinity" came three years later in 1690 from Alonso De León, who called the stream the "La Santísima Trinidad" ("the Most Holy Trinity"). It is one of the longest rivers entirely within one state in the country.
