highland hotels

highland hotels are places tyo stay when you are in the Highlands of Scotland. The term highland or upland is used to denote any mountainous region or elevated mountainous plateau. The Scottish Highlands refers to the mountainous region north and west of the Highland Boundary Fault. Many countries have areas that are officially or unofficially referred to as highlands. Other than Scotland, these include parts of Nigeria, Ethiopia, Papua New Guinea, Syria and Nova Scotia (the latter being Latin for 'New Scotland' due to its resemblance to the country). The Highland council area is a local government area in the Scottish Highlands and the largest local government area in Scotland. Synonymous terms used in other countries include high country, used in New Zealand, New South Wales, Victoria, Tasmania and Southern Queensland in Australia, and parts of the United States (notably North Carolina), and highveld, used in South Africa. Highland is often also used to describe a particular mountain climate, fully termed the highland zone. The highland zone is of relatively low altitude and is distinguished by the growth of thick shrubs such as heather, tussock grasses, and deciduous trees and bushes. The ground in the highland zone is generally well irrigated. This can be compared to the higher altitude alpine zone, which is generally drier and is noted for the sparseness of trees (which are generally coniferous) and shrubs, and the growth of thinner grasses and small flowers. There are also Highlands in Braziland Ethiopia,. Travelodge refers to several hotel chains around the world. Current operations include, United States, Canada, United Kingdom, Ireland and Australia; however, many of these are operated by independent companies who have no connection with the brands operating in other countries. Contents Travelodge in the USA

The Travelodge brand was established by the original Travelodge Corporation's founder, Scott King, in 1939 with the opening of the chain's first motels in Southern California. The first Travelodge opened in San Diego in 1940. For many years, Travelodge was headquartered in El Cajon, California, which is located east of San Diego. During its early years, Travelodge emphasized itself as a budget motel chain that offered functional accommodations at rates lower than other chains by shunning fancy frills in favor of functional amenities such as comfortable beds, free TV and room phones, carpeted floors, in-room coffee pots and swimming pools. Travelodge also emphasized that its motels were centrally located in or near downtown areas in order to be convenient to local restaurants, churches, theaters, shopping areas and tourist attractions. Recently, Travelodge has begun offering a light continental breakfast, called "Bear Bites," consisting of juices, coffee, and a choice of pastries.

In North America Travelodge is franchised by Wyndham Worldwide, the world's largest hotel chain. Targeting families with children, it is best known for its mascot Sleepy Bear, a half awake teddy bear wearing a sleeping cap with his name, a robe with the Travelodge logo, and slippers. Some time ago, Travelodge would give a free toy plush bear to any child staying in the Sleepy Bear Den room, of which every travelodge used to have at least one. Travelodge also has a brand of lower-price motels called Thriftlodge with another mascot named TJ, a freckle-faced bear with a baseball cap and a t-shirt with the Thriftlodge logo and the name TJ on it.[1] Because Thriftlodge is the lowest-priced brand, the original Travelodge competes in the upper-economy segment, along with Sleep Inn, Park Inn/Suites and Red Carpet Inn/Suites. Unlike its corporate sister, Days Inn, which also falls into the upper-economy segment, Travelodge is geared toward active, outdoor-loving, or adventure-oriented families.

The Sleepy Bear Den is a room that is decorated in Sleepy Bear material. Each room consists of Lampshades, Comforters, Curtains, and posters themed after Sleepy Bear. Travelodge used to give out free toy plush "sleepy bears" to any guest staying in the Sleepy Bear Den. Extras included a VCR in which children's movies could be rented in the lobby. Several Travelodge properties are doing away with the Sleepy Bear den, citing high costs in maintaining a single type of room that is not consistent with the others. Current Sleepy Bear dens are disappearing during renovations, and are being converted back to a standard room.

Travelodge in Canada

The Canadian Travelodge hotels are unusual for a Wyndham chain. Though operating under the Travelodge brand, Travelodge Canada administers the Master License for Travelodge and Thriftlodge in Canada. Travelodge Canada Corp. is a subsidiary of Royal Host Corp. based in Calgary, Alberta.

Travelodge hotels in Canada do not participate in Wyndham's loyalty program TripRewards (offered by American hotels); rather, the Canadian properties operate a separate loyalty program called Guest Rewards. Launched in December 2003, the Guest Rewards Program is tailored to the Canadian market, including special features such as instant redemption for room credits right at the property.

Travelodge Canada also shares an exclusive partnership with Hbc, better known by its member stores the Bay, Zellers, Home Outfitters and more. This affiliation gives Travelodge guests in Canada the opportunity to participate in Hbc Rewards [3], a program unique to Travelodge Canada.

With over 110 properties nationwide, Travelodge is the third largest hotel chain in Canada Travelodge is the second largest budget hotel brand (behind Premier Inn) and third biggest hotel chain (by bedroom numbers - approximately 20,000) in the United Kingdom. It is under separate ownership from the Travelodge chain of the United States. Forte

In the 1980s, Lord Forte bought the US Travelodge brand and established it in Britain. He attached them to many of his Little Chefs as Little Chef Lodge hotels before later rebranding them as Travelodges.

Travelodge was formerly a division of Forte Hotels, and was known as Forte Travelodge. Since then, it has become a company in its own right and has over three hundred Travelodge hotels, mainly located beside motorways and major roads, although more and more hotels are being opened in city centres. The first hotel was opened in 1985 at Barton Under Needwood on the A38 near Lichfield.

Granada

In 1995, it was bought by Granada, when the Forte Group (formerly Trusthouse Forte) had a very unharmonious hostile takeover. In 2001, when Granada de-merged (creating Moto), it became owned by Compass Group. In 2003, it was acquired by Permira under the name of TLLC Group Holdings Ltd (113 Little Chefs, owned by TLLC, were nextdoor to Travelodges), moving its headquarters from Toddington to Thame in June 2003. In August 2006, it was sold to Dubai International Capital for £675m.

Travelodge has recently been the subject of bid interest from Whitbread who own the rival Premier Inn chain, however this has been notified to the Competition Commission.

Facilities

A new room design has been introduced in new buildings, and newly refurbished hotels; featuring a new colour scheme and LCD TVs. In most hotels, there are double rooms, family rooms and disabled rooms. All rooms feature en-suite bathroom, free tea & coffee, digital TV. A charged for wi-fi internet connection is available in most, but not all hotels.

Facilities for business people are available, for example meeting rooms.

Eating and drinking facilities vary at locations a great deal. Some hotels are located beside a Little Chef, although this is becoming less common. Virtually all Moto service stations have a Travelodge attached, and some hotels may be close to a pub or family restaurant.

In town and city centre locations, 'Bar Cafes' within the hotel are common. Breakfast and evening meals are available and drinks can be purchased from the licensed bar.

Commercial strategy

In 2004, it bought the Drury Lane Moat House hotel for £11m, and the London Farringdon and London Islington Thistle hotels . In July of that year, it decided to sell 136 of its hotels for £400m, then lease them back.

Travelodge UK also operate nine hotels in the Republic of Ireland and three hotels in Spain.

80% of bookings are now made online.

Booking policy

On 24 October 2006 the BBC One Watchdog programme highlighted Travelodge's policy of overbooking their hotels, turning guests away even when they have booked against a credit card. When a whistleblower revealed that overbooking comes before anything else, Travelodge admitted to this practice and updated their website to confirm this. Guests who are found in this position are found accommodation nearby at no cost to them, but if no rooms are available nearby the reservation is cancelled and the customer is refunded. Travelodge say that overbooking is so more guests can make use of rooms that would otherwise be empty; however, the whistleblower programme contained footage of an internal travelodge training video which stated that their business model required them to run all their hotels at maximum capacity, and that a 'last man standing' policy would ensure this always occurred.

Recyclable hotel

Early in 2008, Travelodge introduced the world's first recyclable hotel that can be built for temporary use at a location, and dismantled when the need has finished. With the appearance of a normal hotel, the pieces are transported to the location and bolted together.

David and Jean Davidson stay In 2007, media around the world reported that David and Jean Davidson, a retired couple originally from Sheffield, stayed at a Newark, Worksop & a Grantham, Lincolnshire location for a combined total of 22 years, making the lodge their home. The retired navy sailor and his wheelchair-bound wife found the cost of their stay comparable with living in a house, but with the benefits of maid service and meals. Following their departure, the motel named their room "The David and Jean Davidson Suite."
