The city of Anaheim was founded in 1857 by grape farmers and wine makers from Franconia in Bavaria. The first such settler was Daniel Kraemer.
In the western portion of the city (not including Anaheim Hills), the major surface streets run east to west, starting with the northernmost, are La Palma Avenue, Lincoln Avenue, Ball Road, and Katella Avenue. The major surface streets running north-south, starting with the westernmost, are Knott Avenue, Beach Boulevard (SR 39), Magnolia Avenue, Brookhurst Street, Euclid Street, Harbor Boulevard, Anaheim Boulevard, and State College Boulevard.
The Santa Ana Freeway (I-5), the Orange Freeway (SR 57), the Riverside Freeway (SR 91) all pass through Anaheim. The Costa Mesa Freeway (SR 55), and the Eastern Transportation Corridor (SR 241) also have short stretches within the city limits.
Settlers voted to call the community Annaheim, meaning "home by the Santa Ana River" in German. The name later was changed slightly, to Anaheim. To the Spanish-speaking neighbors, the settlement was known as Campo Alemán (Spanish for German Camp). The grape industry was destroyed in the 1880s by an insect pest. Other crops - walnuts, lemons, and of course oranges - soon filled the void.
Anaheim Hills is a planned community encompassing the eastern portions of the city of Anaheim, in Orange County, California. Being located in the foothills of the Santa Ana Mountains and adjacent to a large area of undeveloped land, Anaheim Hills is occasionally affected by natural disasters including wildfires and landslides.
The Santa Ana Mountains are a short peninsular mountain range along the coast of Southern California in the United States. They extend for approximately 35 mi southeast of the Los Angeles Basin largely along the border between Orange and Riverside counties.
The range starts in the north with the Chino Hills, heading southeast of the Puente Hills. Its northern section is divided by Santa Ana Canyon, through which the Santa Ana River flows. Its northernmost summit, at 3,045 feet, is Sierra Peak. From there, the major summits are Pleasants Peak, 4,007 feet; Bedford Peak, 3,800 feet; and Bald Peak, 3,947 feet. The next two peaks, Modjeska, 5,496 feet; and Santiago, 5,687 feet, the highest summit in the range; form Saddleback Ridge. The Saddleback, located approximately 20 mi east of Santa Ana, is visible from much of Southern California, and is usually the only part of the range high enough to be dusted with snow in winter storms. South of Saddleback are Trabuco Peak, 4,604 feet; Los Pinos Peak, 4,510 feet; Elsinore Peak, 3,575 feet; Sitton Peak, 3,273 feet; and Margarita Peak, 3,189 feet. The range ends roughly at the Santa Margarita River. Most waterways draining the Santa Anas are ephemeral. The major streams rising from the range typically drain west into the Pacific Ocean, including the Santa Ana River and its tributary Santiago Creek, San Diego Creek, Aliso Creek, San Juan Creek, San Mateo Creek and Santa Margarita River. Water from the east side of the range empties into Lake Elsinore. At the time of the first Spanish exploration, the Santa Anas were settled by two main groups of indigenous peoples, the Tongva in the north, and the Acjachemen and Payomkowishum in the south. A handful of historic sites remain in the range today. Registered California Historical Landmarks include an Indian Village Site in Black Star Canyon, Flores Peak, the mining boomtown sites of Carbondale and Silverado, and Helena Modjeska's home.
Anaheim's largest and most important industry has been tourism. Its Anaheim Convention Center is home to many national conferences, and the Walt Disney Company is a major employer. Many hotels, especially in the city's Resort district, serve theme park tourists and conventiongoers.
