Pune is located 560m above sea level on the western margin of the Deccan plateau. It is situated on the leeward side of the Sahyadri mountain range (the Western Ghats), which separate it from the Arabian sea. It is a relatively hilly city, with its tallest hill, Vetal Hill, rising to 800m above sea level. Just outside the city, the Sinhagad fort is located at a height of 1300m.
The city is known to have existed as a town since 937 AD. Shivaji, the founder of the Maratha Empire, lived in Pune as a boy, and later oversaw significant growth and development of the town during his reign. In 1730, Pune became an important political centre as the seat of the Peshwa, the prime minister of the Chhatrapati of Satara. After the town was annexed to British India in 1817, it served as a cantonment town and as the monsoon capital of the Bombay Presidency until the independence of India. In independent India, Pune is known for its educational facilities, having more than a hundred educational institutes and nine universities. It also boasts a growing industrial hinterland, with many information technology and automotive companies setting up factories in Pune district.
Vetal Hill is the highest point in Pune, India, capping off at about 800 metres. A temple of Vetal, from which the name of the hill is derived, is situated near this point. The Forest Department maintains an observation deck near the temple. The hill is also known by its Marathi name, Vetal Tekdi. Pune is surrounded by many hills including Katraj hill, Panchgao, Parvati, Ramtekdi, Gultekdi, Range Hills, Dive Ghat.
The Deccan Plateau, also known as the Peninsular Plateau or the Great Peninsular Plateau, is a large plateau in India, making up the majority of the southern part of the country, ranging in elevation from 100 metres in the north to 1000 metres in the south. It is located between three mountain ranges and extends over eight Indian states. Its uplands make up a triangle nested within the familiar downward-pointing triangle of the Indian sub-continent's coastline. It encompasses a wide range of habitats, covering most of central and southern India. The Western Ghats form its western boundary, and the Eastern Ghats its eastern boundary. Each rises from their respective nearby coastal plains and nearly meet at the southern tip of India. These two ranges form the southward-pointing vertex of a triangle which encompasses the plateau with the roughly west south west to east north east running Satpura Range and Vindhya Range forming the third northern boundary of the region. The northern ranges separate the plateau from the heavily populated riverine plains of northern India. Large areas of the states of Maharashtra and Karnataka and parts of Andhra Pradesh comprise the Deccan plateau.
The Deccan Plateau lies south of the Indo-Gangetic plain. The Western Ghats Mountain Range is tall and blocks the moisture from the southwest monsoon from reaching the Deccan Plateau, so the region receives very little rainfall. The eastern Deccan Plateau is at a lower elevation spanning the southeastern coast of India. Its forests are also relatively dry but serve to retain the rain to form streams that feed into rivers that flow into basins and then into the Bay of Bengal.
Pune has been a prominent cantonment town since the early 1800s. Several important battles were fought in and around Pune, including the battle of Khadki (1817) and the battle of Koregaon (1818). Many military establishments have been set up here.
