Los Angeles is the largest city in the state of California and the second largest in the United States. Often abbreviated as L.A. and nicknamed The City of Angels, Los Angeles

Los Angeles is irregularly shaped. The city extends for 44 miles longitudinally and for 29 miles latitudinally. The perimeter of the city is 342 miles. It is the only major city in the USA bisected by a mountain range.

The highest point in Los Angeles is Mount Lukens, also called Sister Elsie Peak. Located at the far reaches of the northeastern San Fernando Valley, it reaches a height of 5,080 ft). The major river is the Los Angeles River, which begins in the Canoga Park district of the city and is largely seasonal. The river is lined in concrete for almost its entire length as it flows through the city into nearby Vernon on its way to the Pacific Ocean.

The Los Angeles River starts in San Fernando Valley, San Gabriel Mountains, and Santa Susana Mountains and flows through Los Angeles County, California, from Canoga Park in the west end of the San Fernando Valley, 51 miles (82 km) southeast to its mouth in Long Beach. Several tributaries join the once free flowing and frequently flooding river, forming alluvial flood plains along its banks. It now flows through a concrete channel on a fixed course.

Environmental groups and park advocates support the removal of concrete and the restoration of natural vegetation and wildlife. There are also plans for a series of parks along the river's city frontage in Los Angeles. The Los Angeles River also flows through several Los Angeles County communities and has featured in many Hollywood films

The San Fernando Valley (colloquially known as The Valley) is an urbanized valley located in Southern California, United States. More than half of the city of Los Angeles' land area lies within the San Fernando Valley. Other cities in the Valley include Burbank, Glendale, San Fernando, Calabasas, and Agoura Hills.

Burbank is a city in Los Angeles County, California, United States. Burbank is located in the eastern region of the San Fernando Valley, 12 miles north of Downtown Los Angeles. At one time it was referred to as Beautiful Downtown Burbank on Laugh-In and The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson. Although commonly believed to be named for horticulturalist Luther Burbank who once lived in Santa Rosa, California,

San Fernando is a city located in northwestern Los Angeles County, California, United States. The city was named for the nearby Mission San Fernando Rey de España, and is completely surrounded by the city of Los Angeles, with the districts of Sylmar to the north, Lake View Terrace to the east, Pacoima to the south, and Mission Hills to the west. It is served by the Golden State, Foothill, Ronald Reagan, and San Diego freeways.

The Rio Hondo (translation: Deep River) is a tributary of the Los Angeles River in Los Angeles County, California, approximately 20 miles (32 km) long. As a named river it begins in Irwindale and flows southwest to its confluence in South Gate, passing through several cities (though not the City of Los Angeles).

The Santa Clara River is approximately 116 mi (186 km) long, located in southern California in the United States. It drains an area of the coastal mountains north of Los Angeles. The Santa Clara is one the largest river systems along the coast of Southern California and only one of two remaining river systems in the region that remain in their natural states and not channelized by concrete.

Its headwaters are near the town of Acton in Los Angeles County, on the north slope of the San Gabriel Mountains. It flows along the north side of the Santa Susana Mountains and empties into the Pacific Ocean between the cities of Ventura and Oxnard, in the area designated by the state as the Santa Clara River Estuary Natural Reserve in the Oxnard Plain.
