Casper is the only city in and the county seat of Natrona County, Wyoming, United States although the county is home to a number of small towns and Casper suburbs. Casper is located in east-central Wyoming at the foot of Casper Mountain, the north end of the Laramie Mountain Range, along the North Platte River. Interstate 25 approaches Casper from the North and East and is the main avenue of transportation to and from the city. The towns immediately adjacent to Casper are Mills, Evansville, Bar Nunn, and Mountain View. Unincorporated areas include Allendale, Dempsey Acres, Red Buttes, Indian Springs, and several others.
The city was established east of the former site of Fort Caspar, which was built during the mid 19th century mass migration of land seekers along the Oregon, California and Mormon trails. The area was the location of several ferries that offered passage across the North Platte River in the early 1840s.

Casper Mountain is a long mountain at the north end of the Laramie Mountains overlooking Casper, Wyoming along the North Platte River. At a top elevation of 8130 feet, the mountain rises approximately 3000 feet above Casper. There are many recreation opportunities on the mountain. Casper Mountain has one of very few ski areas with a parking/entry point located above the resort. It is known as Hogadon Ski Area. Although small, the ski area provides the largest source of winter entertainment on the mountain. Other activities include cross country skiing and snowmobiling. The southern side of the mountain is bordered by another mountain known as Muddy Mountain, which in itself, has many recreation opportunities. Much has been discussed about Muddy Mountain's future.

small badlands called Hell's Half-Acre is present in Natrona County, Wyoming.
Badlands are a type of arid terrain where softer rocks and clay-rich soils have
been extensively eroded by wind and water. Canyons, ravines, gullies, hoodoos
and other such geological forms are common in badlands. They are often difficult
to navigate by foot. Badlands often have a spectacular colour display that alternates
from dark black/blue coal stria to bright clays to red scoria.
