Well Selkirk is also famous, and is also in the borders Selkirk, is a place which has things. Selkirk is a small town in the Borders of Scotland. It lies on the River Ettrick, a tributary of the River Tweed. At the time of the 2001 census, Selkirk's population was 5,742. The people of the town are know as Souters, a name meaning, cobblers. Selkirk was formerly the county town of Selkirkshire. Selkirk is one of the oldest burghs (boroughs) in Scotland and is the site of the earliest settlements in what is now the Scottish Borders. Selkirk is the site of the first Border Abbey where William Wallace, was declared guardian of Scotland. Bonnie Prince Charlie, The Marquess of Montrose and the Outlaw Murray all have tenuous connections with the town. Selkirk was originally named Seleschirche, meaning 'Kirk (church) in the Forest'. In 1113, King David I granted Selkirk large amounts of land. Selkirk's population grew up because of its woollen industry, although now that that industry has ceased leaving little in its wake, the town is best known for bannocks, a dry fruit cake. It has a museum and art gallery, and associations with Mungo Park (explorer), James Hogg "The Ettrick Shepherd" a local poet and writer and Walter Scott, a collector of ballads and writer of Romances, both of the late eighteenth and early nineteenth century. It is also home to Scotland's oldest horse racing track, the Gala Rig, on the outskirts of the town Selkirk is only one of the many Borders towns to hold a Common Riding. Hawick and Langholm, also have Common Riding, and the nearby larger town of Glalashiels holds its Braw Lads and Lassies at the same time of year, which is basically the same thing. Peebles has translated Beltane from May to June to try to join in on the same "tradition". Selkirk's, is held on the second Friday after the first Monday in June, though no one knows why. The town's boundaries or 'marches' are ridden. It is the same tradition as "The Beating Of The Bounds" in England, but mounted. It is an exclusive event, the Souters who own a horse being the participants and women are excluded from the central roles. (Women do take part in Galashiels.) Visitors to the town will be surprised to find that nothing is to be had in the town during the event, as all business ceases during the common riding, with the exception of the pubs. Those Souters without horses use the time in drinking, the evenings being a rowdy roustabout in the town. Some Souters wear the town colours of blue and red on Common Riding Day, as well as the colours chosen by the Standard Bearer, which change annually. Many towns ibn this area have these common riding, things, Galashiels does too,. Selkirk's past also includes Sir Walter Scott, known as "Walty the Plamf". In 1799 Scott was appointed Sheriff-Deputy of the County of Selkirk, and was based in the Royal Burgh's Courthouse, which can be found in the town square. Rugby union plays its role in Selkirk culture and society. Void of the class stigma evident in the game throughout the rest of Scotland, rugby in the Scottish Borders is a much more inclusive sport. Selkirk RFC play in their home games at Philiphaugh, and are now in Premiership Division One and Border League (the oldest established rugby union league in the world). I have been in Selkirk, we had chips, there and saw buildings being knocked, down, and there is a Baxters shop, and the Selkirk Market Place, with shops there, and the road through,. Selkirk sound like where Celtic should play though there are fans of pther clubs there too, and Glasgow is where they should play.
Borders Hotels
Many people stay in Borders Hotels, it is a place to stay at times, as the Borders ahas its beutfil countruside and such,. It has rolling hills, the border Reivers, and David Steel was here, and many battles. The borders we have stayed in hotels here, in Galashiels, and also have done things like walked about the place. We have seen the Walter Scott placem, where walked around,k and saw2 his books, and also have stopped there, it has borders with England, and has had a tradition of Lib Dem, and Conservative battles in this rural areas, for Politics, but some SNP and Labour too. It is with castles and many toqwns, the border reicvers used to hide cattle in some gulleys to huide from people who were searching and did not know the local area, also border reivers wore ribbons, so would not kill eachother in battle, in Scotland England wars, yiou know scotland V england, well maybe not just border reviers, well why not just everybody wears them, then none would have killed eachother. Also the boprders is famous as it has a Scottish accent, in Wales the borders has seen much Anglification in some places in the North East,m or really Scousification, in Scotland, it's peiople in North Northumberland, farmers have in the past had Scottish accents,l Trevor Steven had a scots accent tjhough being from that town in North East England, which many there Berwick want to be part of Scotland.
Melrose Hotels
Melrose is a place famous too, many have lived in Melrose, we have gone through it ourselves, We have had food there from Morrisions, and also been through the old building centre, seen peopl;e smoking outside its pubs, and seen the busses, It has rugby picthes there, and is famous for the rugby sevens. Also we skidded round there on the road South, almost died. Also this was as of road building and collapses seeim\ng us speed up. Also Melrose is a name of a US soap, and it has police, ambulanmcve, fire, and hospital service. It has nice looking green hills, and is a famous Scottish place. It has many a hotel troo and many stay here in hotels while on holidays here, Russians and other nationalities people. Also Langolm has hotels hotels in Langolm exist too. It also could be the name of a person. Melrose in Scotland or Melsorse or Melrose in the South of the country is a place that excels in many fields. It is amazing there are so many of these largish towns here, in the Highlands there are far less, in rural areas. I suppose compared to some places there are not that many, but for a area Central Borders where there is no coast, there is allot. MELROSE HOTELS, places to stay when in Melrose, we have also seen people go to church there. play sports bornallot there etc. and do srtuff there. Also there are Peebles Hotels, hotels in Peebles could be places to go to.
