Helen is a city located on the Chattahoochee River in White County in the north of the USA state of Georgia.
Formerly a logging town, the city resurrected itself by becoming a replica of a Bavarian alpine town, in the Appalachians instead of the Alps. Tourism is the main industry in Helen, catering mostly to weekend visitors from the Atlanta area. Helen is extremely crowded in late October, when autumn leaves typically peak. It has also hosted its own Oktoberfest during September, October and November. There are many events and festivals throughout the year. One of the most well known has been the hot air balloon race.
Unicoi State Park & Lodge is a 1,050-acre state park located immediately north-northeast of Helen, Georgia in the northeastern portion of the state. The centerpiece of the park is 53 acre (21.4-hectare) Unicoi Lake on Smith Creek. The park is especially popular in October, when the autumn leaves in the forest change colors.
Entry to the park is from Georgia 356, just off of Georgia 75 (North Main Street in Helen). Georgia 75 Alt allows visitors coming from the south via Cleveland, Georgia to bypass the massive traffic jams on 75 through the town during weekends, holidays, and Oktoberfest. The park also allows access to Anna Ruby Falls, owned by the U.S. Forest Service and run by the non-profit Cradle of Forestry. Separate parking fees must be paid for the park and the falls.
Some tourists who visit the city. may want a luxury hotel or a cheap hotel. Some tourists may prefer ahoptel that is large or small, or one that has good parking access.
White County is a county located in the northeast corner of the USA state of Georgia. It was created on December 22, 1857. The highest point in White County is almost 4,430 feet, in the upper elevations of Tray Mountain. Although the boundary line between White County and neighboring Towns County bisects Tray Mountain, its 4,430 foot summit actually falls in Towns County. The highest mountain summit in the county is the 3,760 foot summit of Wildcat Mountain. Tray Mountain, with an elevation of 4,430 feet is the seventh-highest peak in Georgia. The boundary line between White and Towns counties bisects the mountain, but leaves the summit in Towns County. Tray Mountain is within the borders of the Chattahoochee National Forest and is part of the Tray Mountain Wilderness. The mountain is referred to by some as the grandstand for viewing the Nantahala Mountains in North Carolina and the rest of the Blue Ridge Mountains in Georgia. The Appalachian Trail crosses the peak.
