Watford is a town and district in Hertfordshire, England, situated 19 miles northwest of London and within the bounds of the M25 motorway. The borough lies just to the north of Greater London.
The parish of Watford Rural covers an area to the south of the borough of Watford, in the Three Rivers District. The nearby areas of Bushey, Rickmansworth, Chorleywood, Kings Langley, Abbots Langley and South Oxhey, located in Three Rivers and Hertsmere districts, also form part of the Watford postcode area.
Watford stands on a low hill near the point at which the River Colne was forded by travellers between London and the Midlands. This route, originally a pre-Roman trackway, departed from the ancient Roman Watling Street at Stanmore, heading for the Gade valley and thence up the Bulbourne valley to a low and easily traversed section of the Chiltern Hills near Tring. The modern High Street follows the route of this road.
The ford was close to the later site of the old gas works, now the car park of the Tesco Extra store.[citation needed] The town probably originated in Saxon times as a string of houses on the northern side of this ford. It was located on the first dry ground above the marshy edges of the River Colne.
The town of Hertford retains very much a country-town feel, despite lying only 19.2 miles north of Central London. This is aided by its proximity to larger towns such as Harlow, Bishop's Stortford and Stevenage where modern development has been focused.
The town is beset by traffic
despite the existence of the 1960s bypass called Gascoyne Way. The town centre
is still a labyrinth of medieval streets with many timber-framed buildings hidden
under later frontages, particularly in St Andrew Street.
Hartham Common
The shared valley of the Lea and the Beane is called Hartham Common and this provides a large park to one side of the town centre running towards Ware and lying below the ridge upon which Bengeo is situated.

Hertfordshire is a ceremonial and non-metropolitan county in the East region of England. The county town is Hertford. Hertfordshire is located immediately to the north of Greater London and is part of the East of England Government Office Region. Much of the county is part of the London commuter belt. St Albans is a city in
southern Hertfordshire, England, around 22 miles north of central London, which
forms the main urban area of the City and District of St Albans. It was a settlement
of pre-Roman origin named Verlamion by the Ancient British, Catuvellauni tribe.
It became the first major town on the old Roman road of Watling Street for travellers
heading north and became the Roman city of Verulamium. Saint Alban, the first
British Christian martyr, was beheaded sometime before AD 324 and gave it its
modern name. It is a historic cathedral and market town, and is now a sought-after
dormitory town within the London commuter belt. The St Albans area has a long
history of settlement. The Celtic Catuvellauni tribe had a settlement at Prae
Hill a mile or so to the west. The Roman town of Verulamium, second-largest town
in Roman Britain after Londinium, was built alongside this in the valley of the
River Ver a little nearer to the present town centre.
