Seaside is a city in Clatsop County, Oregon, United States. The name Seaside came from a summer resort built by the railroad magnate Ben Holladay in the 1870s, Seaside House, located a mile south of the business center.
Seaside lies on the edge of the Pacific Ocean, at the southern end of the Clatsop Plains, about 29 km south of where the Columbia River empties into the Pacific. The Necanicum River bisects the town and flows out to the ocean at the northern edge of town. Tillamook Head towers over the south edge of town.
Seaside
is a common tourist destination for residents of the Portland area. The city's
population grows in the summer, particularly during some of the large events and
festivals that Seaside hosts. There has been an annual volleyball tournament held
yearly that has drawn thousands of competitors and participants. Seaside has been
the destination for the Hood to Coast relay race and has held the Portland-to-Coast
relay walk. The Seaside Three Course Challenge, a cross country race, has also
been held at Fort Rilea, near Seaside.
Clatsop County is a county located in the USA state of Oregon. The county is named for the Clatsop tribe of Native Americans, who lived along the coast of the Pacific Ocean Clatsop County was created from the northern and western portions of the original Twality District on June 22, 1844. Until the creation of Vancouver County five days later, Clatsop County extended north across the Columbia into present-day Washington.
