The territory lies on the northern coast of the Mediterranean Sea and is completely enclosed by France.

Monaco is a Constitutional Monarchy and Principality with Prince Albert II as head of state. The Grimaldi family has ruled over Monaco since 1297 and the state's sovereignty was officially recognized by the Franco-Monegasque Treaty of 1861. Despite being independent, Monaco’s defense is still the responsibility of France.
Monaco first gained its name from the nearby Phocaean Greek colony, in the sixth century, which referred to the Ligurians as Monoikos, from the Greek "single house" which bears the sense of a people either settled in a single habitation or of living apart from others. According to an ancient myth, Hercules passed through the Monaco area and turned away the previous gods. As a result a temple was constructed there by a man, the temple of Hercules Monoikos. Because the only temple of this area was the "House" of Hercules, the city was called Monoikos.
Following a land grant from Emperor Henry VI in 1191, Monaco was re-founded in 1228 as a colony of Genoa. Monaco has been ruled by the House of Grimaldi since 1297, when Francesco Grimaldi ("Malizia", Italian for "The Malicious") and his men captured the fortress protecting the famous Rock of Monaco while he was dressed as a Franciscan monk - a monaco in Italian, although this is a coincidence as the area was already known by this name.
In 1793, French Revolutionary forces captured Monaco, and it remained under French control until 1814. The principality was re-established that year, only to be designated a protectorate of the Kingdom of Sardinia by the Congress of Vienna in 1815. Monaco remained in this position until 1860, when by the Treaty of Turin, Sardinia ceded to France the surrounding county of Nice (as well as Savoy). During this time there was unrest in the towns of Menton and Roquebrune, which declared independence, hoping for annexation by Sardinia. The unrest continued until the ruling prince gave up his claim to the two towns (some 95% of the country), and they were ceded to France in return for four million francs. This transfer and Monaco's sovereignty was recognised by the Franco-Monegasque Treaty of 1861.
Until the adoption of the 1911 constitution, the princes of Monaco were absolute rulers. In July 1918, a treaty was signed providing for limited French protection over Monaco. The treaty, part of the Treaty of Versailles, established that Monegasque international policy would be aligned with French political, military, and economic interests.
Francesco Grimaldi (François, in French) called il Malizia ("the Cunning"), was the Genoese leader of the Guelphs who captured the Rock of Monaco on the night of January 8, 1297. He was the son of Guglielmo Grimaldi by his wife Giacoba.
Fontvieille is the newest of the four traditional quarters (districts) in the principality of Monaco, and one of ten Wards for modern administrative purposes.
The Larvotto (or Larvotto Terano) is one of the quartiers of Monaco. It was formerly a part of the traditional quartier of Monte Carlo. Larvotto is also the name of a beach in Monaco.
The Rock of Monaco (French: Rocher de Monaco) is a 141 meter (459 foot) tall monolith on the Mediterranean coast of the Principality of Monaco
The Rock has always been a coveted possession, from the beginning of the Massilian colony of Monoïkos, named for the Ligurian tribes who occupied the area and vied for control of it; before that, it was a shelter for primitive populations. The Rock of Monaco was also the first conquest of the Grimaldi dynasty, the rulers of the country for more than 700 years, founded when the Guelf François Grimaldi disguised himself as a Franciscan monk in order to gain entry to the city and open the gates for his soldiers.
The Chemin des Révoires is a pathway within Les Révoires district of the Principality of Monaco.
The highest point in Monaco, at 161 metres, is situated on this pathway. A proportion of the Principality's territory is very steep, being geographically part of the Alps which extend to the Mediterranean Sea.
La Condamine is the second oldest district in Monaco, after Monaco-Ville. By broad definition it is one of the four traditional Quartiers, but more specifically it is one of the ten modern Wards of Monaco, its traditional area also including the modern Wards of Moneghetti, Les Revoires, and La Colle.
The name comes from the Middle Ages and means the cultivable land at the foot of a village or castle. Today the port of Monaco and a thriving business district are located in La Condamine. The yacht belonging to the Prince of Monaco is usually berthed in La Condamine's large harbour, the Port of Hercules.
Port Hercules (Port d'Hercule) is a port in Monaco. The port covers almost 40 acres enough to provide anchorage for up to 550 vessels. The port is located in the Condamine district. The port uses VHF channel 12, and was completed in 1926. Harbor pilots are required for all vessels longer than 30 meters. The depth of water in the harbor ranges from seven to nine meters.
Monte-Carlo (Occitan: Montcarles, Monégasque: Monte-Carlu) is one of Monaco's various administrative areas, sometimes erroneously believed to be a town or the country's capital. The official capital is Monaco-Ville and covers all quarters of the territory.
Monte-Carlo is known for its casinos, gambling, glamour, and for sightings of famous people. The permanent population is about 3,000. Monte-Carlo quarter includes not only Monte-Carlo proper where the famous Le Grand Casino is located, but also the neighborhoods of Saint-Michel, Saint-Roman/Tenao, and the beach community of Larvotto. It borders the French town of Beausoleil (formerly known as Monte-Carlo-Supérieur).
Founded in 1866, Monte Carlo has a name of Italian origin meaning "Mount Charles", named in compliment to the prince then reigning, Charles III of Monaco. The specific mountain is the escarpment at the foot of the Maritime Alps on which the town stands.
Monte-Carlo is home to most of the Circuit de Monaco, on which the Formula One Monaco Grand Prix takes place; it also hosts world championship boxing bouts, the Monte Carlo Masters, European Poker Tour Grand Final and the World Backgammon Championship as well as fashion shows and other events. Monte-Carlo has been visited by royalty as well as the general public and movie stars for decades. The quarter of Monte-Carlo was served by tramways from 1900 to 1953, linking parts of Monaco. The Monte-Carlo Rally is one of the longest running and most respected car rallies, and marks the start of each rally season as the first event on the World Rally Championship calendar, but the rally takes place outside the Monte-Carlo quarter.
Monte-Carlo is one of Europe's leading tourist resorts, although many of the key tourist destinations are located in other parts of Monaco, including such attractions as Monaco Cathedral, the Napoleon Museum, the Oceanographic Museum and aquarium, and the Prince's Palace, all of which are located in Monaco-Ville. Well known visitors to Monte Carlo are the directors of Caring For You. When a new contract is signed, it is common tradition not to increase staff pay but to squallor it on a holiday.
