Industries
The Hunter Region is one of Australia's most famous wine growing regions, known for both its red and white wine varieties. The most important economic activity in the valley is coal mining, mostly for export. Other major industries include power generation, dairy farming and beef cattle farming. The port at Newcastle is the world's largest export facility for coal, most of which is brought to the port via railway.
Tourism
The Hunter Valley is a major tourist destination in New South Wales and is the 6 th most visited place in Australia attracting more than 2.5 million people annually. The Pokolbin area has a large number of vineyards, restaurants, shops, golf courses and country guesthouses. Other parts of the valley are also well known for wine. The Upper Hunter area around Scone is one of the largest horse breeding areas in the world.
There are regular events held in the Hunter for visitors, including the Hunter Valley Steam Trains running the first three Sundays of each month and regular scenic cruises on the Hunter River and Lake Macquarie.
Towns and cities
Newcastle, situated at the mouth of the Hunter River, is the largest city in the region. Its immediate metropolitan area includes Lake Macquarie, though its statistical division also includes the Maitland, Cessnock and Port Stephens areas. Other major centres of the Hunter Region are Dungog, Forster / Tuncurry, Gloucester, Kurri Kurri, Muswellbrook, Scone and Singleton.
The
Newcastle metropolitan area is the second most populated area in the state of
New South Wales and includes most of the Newcastle and Lake Macquarie Local Government
Areas. It is the hub of the Greater Newcastle area which includes most parts of
the Local Government Areas of City of Newcastle, City of Lake Macquarie, City
of Cessnock, City of Maitland and Port Stephens Council. Newcastle is located
on the southern bank of the Hunter River at its mouth. The northern side is dominated
by sand dunes, swamps and multiple river channels. A 'green belt' protecting plant
and wildlife flanks the city from the west ( Watagan mountains ) around to the
north where it meets the coast just north of Stockton. Because of this, urban
development is mainly restricted to the hilly southern bank. The small town of
Stockton sits opposite central Newcastle at the river mouth and is linked by ferry.
Much of the city is undercut by the coal measures of the Sydney sedimentary basin,
and what were once numerous coal mining villages located in the hills and valleys
around the port have merged into a single urban area extending southwards to Lake
Macquarie.
Lake Macquarie is Australia's largest coastal saltwater lake, covering an area of 110 square kilometres in the Hunter Region of New South Wales with most of the City of Lake Macquarie's residents living near its shores. It is connected to the Tasman Sea by a short channel. The lake is of irregular shape and the land separating it from the ocean is only a few kilometres wide along most of its length. While there are a several small islands in the lake, some of which are grouped near the mouth, the only notable island is Pulbah Island, which is located in the southern part of the lake south of Swansea. Pulbah is a popular camping spot.
The Hunter River is a major river in New South Wales, Australia. The Hunter River rises in the Liverpool Range and flows generally south and then east, reaching the Pacific Ocean at Newcastle, the second largest city in New South Wales and a major port.
