Jindabyne is a town in New South Wales, Australia that overlooks Lake Jindabyne near the Snowy Mountains, in Snowy River Shire. It is a popular holiday resort, especially in winter, due to its proximity to ski resorts in the Kosciuszko National Park, including Thredbo and Perisher Blue. However, Jindabyne is also a popular tourist destination in summer as well, tourists frequenting Jindabyne to use Lake Jindabyne for activities such as fishing, water skiing and wakeboarding.
Originally situated on land that is now part of Lake Jindabyne, the township was transferred to its present location in the 1960s due to the damming of the Snowy River as part of the Snowy Mountains Scheme.
It is one of the highest settlements of its size in Australia, at approximately 900 metres above sea level. Light snowfalls sometimes occur during winter. In mid-July in 2004 and 2005, snow fell up to half a metre following freak snowfalls over a large area of New South Wales.
Jindabyne has been the setting (and shooting location) for two recent feature films, the multi AFI winning Somersault in 2004 and Jindabyne in 2006.
Jindabyne is connected to the surrounding area by Kosciuszko Road, the Alpine Way and the Barry Way.
The Snowy Mountains, known informally as "The Snowies", are the highest Australian mountain range and contain the Australian mainland's highest mountain, Mount Kosciuszko, which reaches 2,228 metres AHD.
The range contains Australia's five highest peaks, all above 2100 metres. They are located in southern New South Wales and are part of the larger Australian Alps and the Great Dividing Range. This is mainland Australia's only true Alpine region with large natural snowfalls every winter. Snow normally falls the most during June, July and Early August. Most of the snow has melted by Late Spring. The Tasmanian highlands are the other Alpine region in Australia.
It is host to the confusingly named Mountain Plum-pine, a low lying type of conifer suspected of being the world's oldest living organism.[citation needed] It is one of the centres of the Australian snow industry during the winter months.
The Alpine Way and the Snowy Mountains Highway are the major roads through and around the Snowy Mountains.
