Atlanta sits atop a ridge south of the Chattahoochee River. Atlanta has the highest average elevation of any major city east of Denver.
The Eastern Continental Divide line enters Atlanta from the south, proceeding to downtown. From downtown, the divide line runs eastward along DeKalb Avenue and the CSX rail lines through Decatur. Rainwater that falls on the south and east side runs eventually into the Atlantic Ocean while rainwater on the north and west side of the divide runs into the Gulf of Mexico via the Chattahoochee River. That river is part of the ACF River Basin, and from which Atlanta and many of its neighbors draw most of their water. Being at the far northwestern edge of the city, much of the river's natural habitat is still preserved, in part by the Chattahoochee River National Recreation Area.
The Chattahoochee River runs from the Chattahoochee Spring in the Appalachian Mountains of northeastern Georgia, near the Carolinas, to the southwestward to Atlanta and through its suburbs. It eventually turns to the due south to form the southern half of the Georgia/Alabama state line. Flowing through a series of reservoirs, it flows by Columbus, Georgia, the second-largest city in Georgia, and Ft. Benning of the U.S. Army. At Columbus, it crosses the Fall Line of the eastern United States.

The area sprawls across the low foothills of the Appalachian Mountains to the north and the piedmont to the south. The northern and some western suburbs tend to be higher and significantly more hilly than the southern and eastern suburbs. The highest point in the immediate area is Kennesaw Mountain, followed by Sweat Mountain, Stone Mountain, and Little Kennesaw Mountain. Others include Blackjack Mountain, Lost Mountain, Brushy Mountain, Pine Mountain, and Mount Wilkinson (Vinings Mountain). Many of these play prominently in the various battles of the Atlanta Campaign during the American Civil War. If the further-north counties are included, Bear Mountain is highest, followed by Pine Log Mountain, Sawnee Mountain, and Hanging Mountain, followed by the others listed above.
An extinct fault
line called the Brevard Fault runs roughly parallel to the Chattahoochee River,
but its last movements were apparently prehistoric, thus it is considered extinct
and not a threat to the region.
Kennesaw Mountain is a mountain between Marietta and Kennesaw, Georgia in the United States. Its summit at 1,808 feet (551 m) is the highest point in metro Atlanta (followed by Sweat Mountain). The local terrain averages roughly 1,000 feet (305 m) AMSL. The mountain is actually two summits:
"Big Kennesaw", where the modern-day parking area
and scenic overlook are located
"Little Kennesaw Mountain", where
several light hiking trails and nature areas connect the mountains to the rest
of the park
