Australian International Basketball player.

A pic of her

Height 6 ft 5 in (1.96 m)
Weight 187 lbs (84,8 kg)

Born May 11, 1981 in Albury, New South Wales, Australia

Lauren Jackson was the daughter of Gary and Maree, who both represented Austria at basketball.

Her 6 foot 2 inches tall mum played for Louisiana State & averaged 27.7 points & 16.4 rebounds a game in one 1970s year.

She started playing basketball at 4.

She made the National Junior Squad at 13.

She moved to the Australian Institute of Sport when still a teenager. Where she and other picked out, future sports stars do weights and sport training. In a government project, for Australian sports medals.

Apparently as her family played so much "ball", that coaches had little to teach her.

She mediated in front of a famous USA men's team's basketballer from a young age, before matches

And she played for the Australian Women's basketball Team, known as the Opals, at 16.

In Australia she was teased when young for being tall, which made her shyer, but she grew in confidence when a famous basketballer, and now is not so shy.

She reached 6 3 at 16, and weighed 150 lbs, and started to improve from a shot taker, to good at passing and such. and dribble, becoming a playmaker.

While playing for AIS the 16-18 year old Basketball team she won the WNBL, the Australian Women's Basketball League.

See list at bottom of this page, for all the winners of that competition, all the other winners are proper teams, not youth selects. She was the best player in the team by far.

She played for the Opals, in 1998 in the Basketball World Championships

Where the team, won the Bronze, she started the competition on the bench, and finished it as the star player.

She then signed a 2 season deal to play for the Canberra Capitals, who then would win 4 titles in a row, 1999-2000, 2001-02, 2002-03 and 2005-2006.

At the start she apparently gave as good as she got, though she did complain still just before the 2000 Summer Olympics about other players calling her names before matches, in a clip. She also said she saw Lisa Leslie as a roll model, but in the world of international basketball, then began her rivalry with her, elbowing her in the chest in a match, in 1999. This rivalry became later in the WNBA the strongest rivalry in the league. She scored 127 points, got 23 blocked shots, won 12 steals & 67 rebounds. Seen as the best Australian player in the competition.

The Opals, had won a Bronze in 1996 at the Olympics, via team playing, but the coach felt they were relying on her too much, even though she often scored 30 a game, but not all the time.

But this did not turn out to be that much of a problem.

Though before the 2000 Olympics, she had a stare down with Lisa Leslie, in a game.

At 6 foot 5 she was by a mile the star player. They beat the Brazil team, in the Olympics Semi Final, and then lost to the USA. Where she pulled out Lesli'e hair extensions.

She was not that aggressive a player at the moment in some ways but became more so in the WNBA.

Which she joined in 2001, for 10s of thousands of dollars, joining the bottom team of the season before the Seattle Storm. As thye league gives the top rookie to the worst team.

She scored a record amont of pts, 20 for her team in the first game.

She was runner up in the best rookie that year,

The next year any homesickness fell, as Sue Bird joined who became her best friend in basketball.

She was put in the All Star Squad, and was again a top scorer in the League.

But the next year in 2003 under Anne Donovan as coach she got even better. She set a WNBA field record with 17 pts in one game.

She was nominated as MVP that season, and was top scorer in the WNBA.

The next year saw a weaker Australia team than in 2000 lose out to the USA again, and go home with a Silver Medal.

She again was top scorer and won the WNBA championship with Seattle Storm, 2004.

In 2005 injury stopped her playing all that much.

For Sale Lauren Jackson poster,

In 2006, she was offered AUD 200,000 just to play a few games. in Russia. But chose to play for a team in the Korean League, not the Australian league, for a season, in the off season, as of more money than that offered in Australia, and as season lengh was better than higher offers in other lands, like Russia.

And will play in the WNBA still.

Jackson is regarded as the best ever Australian Women's Basketballer, and has won 2 Silver Medals at the Olympics, and 1 WNBA Championship.

She has been in a sense a model, by being in Black and White, posing nude for the magazine, And also being in a non nude photo shoot for Sport Illustrated.

In November 2006, she said she would not mind having a game by some Professional Male Basketball players, she said she did not think she would do brilliantly but felt she could survive, and do ok. She also has a younger brother.

In Korea she helped her team Seoul-based club Samsung Bichumi win the league as the MVP,

In 2007 she played with Sue Bird and Diana Taurasi for Spartak Moscow, helping them with the Russian Super League in 5 games over Samara,

2007 also saw her win her second WNBA MVP award, with a high points mark being her 47 Points against the Washington Mystics in one game.

In the 2006 FIBA World Championship for Women in Brazil, the Opals defeated Russia to win the gold medal. Jackson captained the team. This was her first gold medal, which she had wanted very much, they beat Russia, 91-74 in the final, after beating Brazil, in the semi final. They won 9 and lost 0 games.
