Lake Lewis Smith or Lewis Smith Lake
Lewis Smith Lake was built in 1961,
after Lewis Smith Dam was built. It holds a area of water covering 21000 acres
so it is estimated by some to hold more water than any lake in Alabama. As a quiote
deep resesvoir, it holds many fish. It is said you can see through the emerald
green water 10 feet from the surface at times.
The lake is famed for boating, bass fishing, and many other kinds of fishing. The lake sits by the 180,000 Acre Bankhead National Forest, and has mnay homes on offer.
It is placed in the Northern Central areas of Alabama, and in the Cullman, Walker and Winston counties of the state, and is owned by the Alabama Power Company.
Some call it the cleanest lake in all Alabama, with fish placed in by services.
1957 was when the The Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) said Alabama could build the dam and the powerhouse at Sipsey Fork tributary.
It was named after Lewis Martin Smith who was the Alabama Power company president from 1952 to 1957.
The dam is one of the largest earth and rock filled dam in the Eastern USA.
The dam gets 2200 foot long with a top height being 300 foot
With a full pool level 510 feet over the average recorded sea level.
The water cam get 264 feet deep.
It has a watershed of 944 square miles
