Toledo Bend Reservoir is a large artificial lake on the Sabine River between Texas and Louisiana. Construction on the Toledo Bend Dam began on May 11, 1964, and water impoundment began on October 3, 1966. The lake has an area of 185,000 acres, the largest man made body of water in (or partially in) Texas, the largest in the South, and the fifth largest in the United States. The dam is capable of generating 92 megawatts of electrical power.

The reservoir is a popular location for freshwater fishing.

The land along the Orange area often flooded from the Sabine, with destructive effects. Also, the considerations for municipal, industrial, agricultural, and recreational purposes were part of the reasons the Texas State Legislature formed the Sabine River Authority of Texas in 1949, and in 1950 the Louisiana State Legislature created the Sabine River Authority, State of Louisiana for the project.

With both authorities in agreement, in 1955 a feasibility report was initiated and by 1959, the two states allocated 30 million dollars for the project. The land was acquired in 1963, with the work following the subsequent year. The Massman-Johnson Construction Company served as the general contractor, and by the completion of the project in 1969, Texas’ estimated share of the funds was $70 million. The dam was built by the two states, without any assistance from the federal government. Louisiana Director of Public Works Claude Kirkpatrick, who was also president of the Sabine River Authority of Louisiana at the time, pushed for the joint agreement with Texas, in the absence of federal funds, to make the project a reality.

The Sabine River is a river, 555 miles long, in the USA states of Texas and Louisiana. In its lower course, it forms part of the boundary between the two states and empties into the Gulf of Mexico. The river formed part of the United States-Mexican international boundary during the early 19th century. The upper reaches of the river flow through the prairie country of northeast Texas. Along much of its lower reaches, it flows through pine forests along the Texas-Louisiana border, and the bayou country near the Gulf Coast. The river drains an area of 9,756 square miles, of which 7,426 square miles is in Texas and the remainder in Louisiana.

Orange is a city in Orange County, Texas, United States. It is the county seat of Orange County, and is the easternmost city in Texas. This community was originally called Green's Bluff for a man named Resin Green, a Sabine River boatman who arrived at this location sometime before 1830. A short time later, in 1840, the town was renamed Madison in honor of President James Madison. To resolve the frequent post office confusion with another Texas community called Madisonville, the town was renamed Orange in 1858. Much of the growth of Orange in the late 1800s is attributed to the fact that there were 17 sawmills within the city limits, making Orange the center of the Texas lumber industry. The harbor leading into the Port of Orange was dredged in 1914 to accommodate large ships. Ship building during World War I contributed to the growth in population and economy. The Great Depression affected the city negatively, and it was not until World War II that the local economy was boosted again. A USA Naval Station was installed and additional housing was provided for thousands of defense workers and servicemen and their families. The population increased to just over 60,000 residents. After the war, the peace-time population decreased to stabilize at about 25,000. It was at this time that the Navy Department announced that Orange would be one of eight locations where reserve vessels would be stored. The City of Orange hosts several cultural and historical attractions.

Orange County is a county of the USA state of Texas. The county seat is the city of Orange. It is part of the Beaumont–Port Arthur Metropolitan Statistical Area. The county is bordered on the east by the Sabine River and on the southwest by the Neches River. The geography of Orange County varies considerably, with saltwater marshes in much of the southwestern part of the county that borders Sabine Lake, and Piney Woods in the north. Elevation rarely reaches 30 feet above sea level.
