The Tallest Blonde Women's Volleyball or Basketball Player
Height: 6 foot 8 or 2 Metres 3 cm tall.
Weight:
187 lbs. / 84,8 kg.
born February 23, 1979, in the Village Shpakovskoe
in Russia
Maria Stepanovais first played basketball when she was a 8 year old. She is. a Russian professional and Olympic female basketball player. In the US, she plays for the Phoenix Mercury in the Women's National Basketball Association (WNBA).
At a height of six foot eight inches, she is the second-tallest player in the WNBA (with Lindsay Taylor & Katie Feenstra ). Just Margo Dydek, 7' 2", is taller.
She grew up in Tosno.
She played for the Phoneix team from 1998-2001, where she played 99 WNBA games, including 20 against Detroit in 2001. Her career high.
She then took some year off to have a baby, but then came back and played in the 2005 season, where she has not played that many games yet.
Somebody said they once saw her standing next to Gamova, in the Athens Olympics.
She as a 203 cm tall centre was named the 2005 FIBA Europe Player of the Year and EuroBasket Women 2005 Most Valuable Player, on Russias silver medal team after averaging 18 points and 9.6 rebounds. She was the key of of Samaras team that won 2005 EuroLeague title. As Samara trailed in the championship game she scored 9 points and took three offensive rebounds in the last 5 minutes, coming from behind to win 69-66. In Samara's 1st eleven games, she averaged 11.4 rebounds a game, 2nd-top in the Euroleague Women, and 2.3 blocks, the top rating for the league. And earned a Olympic bronze at 2004 Athens Games, and was a member of 2000 & 1996 (At 17) Olympic teams. She did not do that much for the Russian 1996 Olympic team, scoring between a 1 and 2 pts a game on avaerage, as she was not a full team player yet. Probably there just for experience. She did more at the 2000 Games, and with Elena Baranova was seen as one of the key players. By 2004, she could be said to be leading the player to the Bronze medal. From 1998-2001, she played in WNBA with Phoenix Mercury.
In early 2006, as of her play at BC Volgaburmash Samara in 2005, she recieved the FIBA award for player of the player. From votes from the international media.
She did not play any games in 2006 in the WNBA.
But in 2006 she did play on the South Korean basketball league. Where she was celebrated as the only player to score a dunk in the league, while she was playing at the Cheonan Savers. As she was the only player in the league to do so, they decided to make dunks be worth 3 pts, to enliven the league.
Samara is a city on the Volga River, one of the largest in Russia, their translated name in English is the Samara Dolphins. Also in 2006, this team did not win the title. But she was still in the team, and is for 2007. Just like for football, Russian sport now has more money in it, after the deep depression during decommunisation. As businessmen are now putting money in it. So now more players stay in Russia, than in the 1990s, when many were going abroad. But Russian sport is still not as big as the far larger USSR's sporting system. During the era of the USSR Samara was called Kuybyshev.
She has 1 sister. She loves shrimp and strawberries. and hockey. She enjoys Russian Comedies, Ricky Martin and Russian music.
Played in Russia for 3seasons, before WNBA, Forse-Majore 1995-96, CSKA 1996-98, averaged 15.9 points, during the 1997-98 season. played in Czech Republic (BK Gambrinus) during 2000 off-season where averaged 16.3 ppg. Spent another WNBA off-season b balling foe Gambrinus JME in Czech Republic.
