There is also a myth going around. That it was a war of Scottish versus Scotish, actually it was English versus Scottish far more than Scottish v Scottish. The fact that both armies, were Scottish in large numbers does not matter. As actually the butcher who comitted the massacres after the battle did in no sense consider himself Scottish and he was the man responsible. Nothing on that scale of Scottish massacre of Scottish had happened before then. The only comparable massacres were the Massacre of Berwick. The massacres of Berwick of 1296
To claim that it was some Civil war between Highland and Lowland is bad for Scotland, it is also untue. As this makes it seem as if Scotland is more divisive than it is, like some kind of divide and rule against Scotland, by the establishment. and that is a bad thing for Scotland. The fact is, it was a brutal crushing of a revolt by a king who cared more about England than Scotland. There is no doubt that the Royal Establishment in Lodon were responsible for the massacres, and to pretend it was Scot v Scot, is a thing where you say the Royal establishment have never done bad, and then handing responsibilty to people, who had far less responsibility than them. Which could only cause a psycho style arrogance, for a certain right wing establishemnt that it has never done bad. And cultural cringe and divison and crisis in Scotland. The truth is needed, not this idea that Royalists are the only ones with feelings.
It was not really a war of Scotland V Scotland as people from the Highlands to Edinburgh supported the rebel army, in many cases hoping it would bring independence to Scotland, even Glasgow a city in those days maybe less so compared to other Scottish cities today was a city more needing empire trade and union tradedid not give big opposition. While it was England where there was panic and disstress about the invading army. I would say yes both sides of the war were supporting Royal Dictators, and were bad, but really what the Hannoverians did showed they were not pro Scottish. They were not any good. And shameful, And it is a relief they did not have even more power. What is for sure is it was royal army that comitted atrrocities afterward,s proving royalism, to be wrong, then it oppressed Highlanders afterwards brutally, and if anything it was not really a Scottish V Scottish war.
Also there is a myth of trying to pretend Walter Scott invented Tartan for the coronation of a later Hannoverian king, so then the brutal kings can be thanked for that. Actually tartan was in the Highlands and banned by these same people. The fact Walter Scott helped give the tradition in his great way, does not mean Tartan was started by him. Tartan would have survived and Scotland would still have this money makling tradition without all that.
