Some may want a hotel by a airport as there airplane has been delayed so they need a hotel room quickly and do not want to travel to far. Some may want a hotel room by the airport as they want to be able to get to the airport quickly once their holiday has stopped or started so they can get to their flight quickly. They may not have to time to travel long distances to and from the city to the airports. Some workers at the airport may want short term accommodation by the airports. Growth of the surrounding area and the nearby flight path for Miami International Airport forced the airport to relocate further to the southwest, near the community of Kendall. Florida International University is now located on the site of the old Tamiami Airport. The Kendall - Tamiami airport is owned and operated by the Miami-Dade Aviation Department. At times there have been 450 aircraft based there, primarily light single-engine propeller planes.

Miami International Airport has been a a public airport located eight miles northwest of the central business district of Miami, in unincorporated Miami-Dade County, Florida, United States. It is between the cities of Miami, Hialeah, Doral, and Miami Springs, the village of Virginia Gardens, and the unincorporated community of Fountainbleau. Miami has been a premier gateway between the US and Latin America, and, along with Atlanta's Hartsfield-Jackson Airport, Miami has been one of the largest aerial gateways into the American South, owing to its proximity to tourist attractions. The airport was opened to flights in 1928 as Pan American Field, the operating base of Pan American Airways Corporation, on the north side of the modern airport property. After Pan Am acquired the New York, Rio, and Buenos Aires Line, it shifted most of its operations to the Dinner Key seaplane base, leaving Pan Am Field largely unused until Eastern Air Lines began flying there in 1934, followed by National Airlines in 1937.

The seaplane base has been publicly owned. In 1926, Chalk's International Airlines built an air terminal on a landfill island, Watson Island, where it continued to operate for 75 years. Its scheduled and other flights by flying boats and amphibian aircraft served many points in the Bahamas and other nearby destinations.

Opa-locka Airport also known as Opa-locka Executive Airport, has been a general aviation airport and joint civil-military airfield located in Opa-locka and 10 miles north of the central business district of Miami, in Miami-Dade County, Florida, United States. Aviation pioneer Glenn Curtiss retired from aircraft development and manufacturing in the 1920s and became a real estate developer in Florida. In 1926 he founded the City of Opa-locka, naming it Opa-tisha-woka-locka (quickly shortened to Opa-locka), a Native American name that translates into the high land north of the little river on which there is a camping place. Adjacent to the city he created the Florida Aviation Camp on a large tract of land, and moved his Glenn Curtiss Aviation School there from its former location close to Biscayne Bay in Miami. He transferred part of the land to the City of Miami, and it became the Miami Municipal Airport.
