The elevation of the area never rises above 40 ft and averages at around 6 ft above mean sea level in most neighborhoods, especially near the coast. The highest undulations are found along the coastal Miami Rock Ridge, whose substrate underlies most of the eastern Miami metropolitan region. The main portion of the city lies on the shores of Biscayne Bay which contains several hundred natural and artificially-created barrier islands, the largest of which contains Miami Beach and South Beach.
Lake Okeechobee, locally referred to as The Lake or The Big O is a freshwater lake in the USA state of Florida. It is the 2nd largest freshwater lake wholly within the continental USA, second only to Lake Michigan and the largest in the southern USA. Okeechobee covers 730 square miles, slightly smaller than the state of Rhode Island and is relatively shallow, with an average depth of only 9 feet . The lake is divided between Glades, Okeechobee, Martin, Palm Beach, and Hendry counties. Maps of Florida show that all five of these counties meet at a point near the center of the lake, making this point a Tertiary quintipoint:
Biscayne Bay (Bahía Vizcaina, in Spanish) is a lagoon that is approximately 35 miles long and up to 8 miles wide located on the Atlantic coast of south Florida. It is usually divided for purposes of discussion and analysis into three parts, North Bay, Central Bay and South Bay. North Bay separates Miami Beach on its barrier island from Miami on the mainland. It has been severely affected over the last century by raw sewage releases, urban runoff, shoreline bulkheading, dredging, the creation of artificial islands and the loss of natural fresh water flow into the bay.
The Miami area was first inhabited for more than one thousand years by the Tequesta Indians, but was later claimed for Spain in 1566 by Pedro Menéndez de Avilés. A Spanish mission was constructed one year later in 1567. In 1836, Fort Dallas was built, and the Miami area subsequently became a site of fighting during the Second Seminole War.
The Collins Bridge was a bridge that crossed Biscayne Bay between Miami, Florida and Miami Beach. At the time it was completed, it was the longest wooden bridge in the world. It was built by farmer and developer John S. Collins (1837-1928) with financial assistance from automotive parts and racing pioneer Carl G. Fisher. The 2 1/2 mile wooden toll bridge opened on June 12, 1913, providing a critical link to the newly established Miami Beach, formerly accessible only by a ferry service.
Miami holds the distinction of being the only major city in the USA founded by a woman, Julia Tuttle, who was a local citrus grower and a wealthy Cleveland native. The Miami area was better known as Biscayne Bay Country in the early years of its growth. Some published reports described the area as a promising wilderness. The area was also characterized as one of the finest building sites in Florida. The Great Freeze of 1894-1895 hastened Miami's growth, as the crops of the Miami area were the only ones in Florida that survived. Julia Tuttle subsequently convinced Henry Flagler, a railroad tycoon, to expand his Florida East Coast Railroad to the region. Miami was officially incorporated as a city on July 28, 1896 with a population of just over 300.
Miami prospered during the 1920s with an increase in population and infrastructure but weakened after the collapse of the Florida land boom of the 1920s, the 1926 Miami Hurricane and the Great Depression in the 1930s.
