American Stock Exchange
(AMEX)
The Exchange traces its roots to colonial times when stock brokers created outdoor markets to trade government securities. The AMEX started as such a market at the curbstone on Broad Street near Exchange Place. The curb brokers gathered round lamp posts and mail boxes, putting up lists of stocks for sale. As trading activity increased, shouting reached such a high level special hand signals were introduced so brokers could continue trading. In 1921 the market was moved indoors into the building where it resides, and the hand signals remained in place for decades.
Amex brings a unique dimension to the trading of Nasdaq and other
market center stocks: large, well-capitalized specialist firms trading in the
sophisticated auction-market environment of an exchange. The Amex also supports
automatic execution of orders in the latest implementation of its NETS order book.
The dynamics of the marketplace have changed dramatically, providing an opportunity
for an auction market alternative:
Out of the 3 major American stock exchanges, the AMEX has the most liberal policies concerning company listing, as most of its companies are generally smaller compared to the NYSE and NASDAQ. Amex also specialises in trading of ETFs, and hybrid / structured securities. Exchange-traded funds (or ETFs) are open-ended collective investment schemes, traded as shares on most global stock exchanges. The majority of USA listed ETF's are traded at the AMEX including the SPDR and most Powershares.
AMEX trades shares, the rights to buy shares in the future, and a slice of trading activity on different stock exchanges around the world. A BBC report once said that with "the noise. The smell. The bright colours. The boxes full of sandwiches and melon slices. Going behind the scenes at the American Stock Exchange is all a bit In terms of its trading (rather than size), it's almost like a combination of the London Stock Exchange and London's futures and options exchange LIFFE. It's the sort of thing we used to have at the London Stock Exchange before the reforms of the 1980s".
While the City makes its preparations for the first anniversary
of the attacks next month, it's also making what it can better than before.

The surname York, according to a website the house of names, is part of the ancient legacy of the Anglo Saxon tribes of Britain. It is a product of when the family lived in the county of Yorkshire. Yorkshire, which was the largest county in northern England, was divided into three administrative ridings: North Riding, West Riding, and East Riding. The town of York was the military capital of Roman Britain, the capital of Northumbria, and seat of an Archbishop. Yorkshire was also the home to the House of York, which was an English royal dynasty from 1461 to 1485. The reigning members of the House of York were Edward IV, Edward V and Richard III. Their rivalry with the House of Lancaster resulted in the Wars of the Roses, which lasted from 1455 to 1485 and ended when the Lancastrian Henry VII united the two houses by marrying Elizabeth, the daughter of Edward IV.Spelling variations include: Yorke and others. First found in Wiltshire where they were seated from very ancient times, before and after the Norman Conquest in 1066.
