Voice over Internet Protocol - mobile phones

AKA VoIP, IP Telephony, Internet telephony, Broadband telephony, Broadband Phone and Voice over Broadband

There are two ways to make a phone call over the internet - computer to computer and computer to phone. Phone calls over the internet use a system called 'VOIP' or Voice Over Internet Protocol.

routing of voice conversations over the Internet or through any IP based network.

Protocols used to carry voice signals over an IP network are referred to as Voice over IP or VoIP protocols. They may be viewed as commercial realizations of the experimental NVP invented in 1973 for the ARPANET.ce providers. cost savings are due to utilizing a single network to carry voice and data, especially where users have existing underutilized network capacity that can carry VoIP at no extra cost.

There are two types of PSTN to VoIP services: DID and access numbers. DID will connect the caller directly to a VoIP user while access numbers require the caller to input the extension number of the VoIP user. Access numbers are usually charged as a local call to the caller and free to the VoIP user while DID has a monthly fee. There are also DID that are free to the VoIP user but is chargeable to the caller.

Telcos and consumers have invested billions in mobile phone equipment. In developed nations, mobile phones achieved nearly complete market penetration, and many people are giving up landlines. Given this situation, it is not entirely clear whether there would be a significant higher demand for VoIP among consumers until either a) public or community wireless networks have similar geographical coverage to cellular networks or b) VoIP is implemented over legacy 3G networks. However, "dual mode" handsets, which allow for the seamless handover between a cellular network and a WiFi network, are expected to help VoIP become more popular. The first company launching mobile VoIP in the world was (truphone). Phones like the Nokia E60, E61 have been the first dual mode handsets capable of delivering mobile VoIP with long battery life.

Handheld Devices are another type of medium whereby you can use VoIP services. Since most of these devices are limited to using GSM / GPRS type of communication mediums, almost all of handheld devices use WiFi.

voip phone

A VoIP phone is an entity used to make telephone calls over the internet. VoIP phones use one of several competing communication standards to send their calls through a network. VOIP is a way of taking a current method of talking (Analog Audio Signals) and adapting them to become Digital Data that can be transmitted over an internet.

different ways this can be done.

A computer application – most recognized simplest way to make a call all that is required is an internet connection, speakers, microphone and a sound card.
ATA (analog telephony adapter), device is pretty much self explanatory it simply plugs into your existing home phone, your computer and an internet connection. This acts as an analog-to-digital converter, the phone is then ready to make calls using VoIP technology.
IP Phones – identical to normal phone but instead of connecting to normal phone box on the wall, they connect into a router using an RJ-45 Ethernet connector, this then becomes a fully operational phone with all software onboard.

A VoIP VPN combines Voice over IP and Virtual Private Network technologies to offer a method for delivering secure voice. VoIP transmits digitized voice as a stream of data, the VoIP VPN solution accomplishes voice encryption quite simply, applying standard data encryption mechanisms inherently available in the collection of protocols used to implement a VPN.
