Trivia

The Boston Stock Exchange (BSE) is a regional stock exchange located in Boston, Massachusetts. The third-oldest stock exchange in the United States, it was founded in 1834. The BSE's roots go back to the 1830s when Bostonians were looking for new ways to invest the wealth they had earned through shipping, banking, and insurance. As New England's - and the nation's - industry grew, capital had to be raised to expand the region's businesses and fund larger enterprises.

To meet this need, 13 business leaders founded the Boston Stock Exchange in 1834 as the third U.S. stock exchange, creating a meeting place for local stock brokers to trade their shares. Initially, only the stocks of local banks and insurance companies were traded on the new exchange. Soon mill, railroad, utility, and canal stocks were added. In 1878, AT&T was listed just two years after Alexander Graham Bell had invented the telephone in his Boston workshop. In fact, capital raised in Boston funded many of the factories, mines, and railroads that fueled the economic expansion of the US in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries.

Today, the BSE is an integral part of Boston's financial community, which is the third largest investment management center in the world, eclipsed only by New York and London. Boston, the birthplace of the mutual fund, is now arguably the "mutual fund capital" of the world with literally trillions of dollars invested in funds managed here.

As a national, registered securities exchange, the BSE provides a competitive marketplace for companies in various stages of development and from a multitude of industries seeking to increase exposure to investors and raise capital within a secure and regulated environment. Approximately 20% of the BSE's companies are headquartered in the New England region while the remainder are located throughout the country or outside of the U.S.

Primary Listed Companies
A BSE "primary-listed" company is one that meets and maintains the Exchange's strict quantitative and qualitative listings requirements.

Dually-listed Companies
A BSE "dually-listed" company is one that is listed on more than one U.S. exchange. For example, AT&T and GE are considered dually-listed companies because they meet the requirements and associated fees of the BSE's listings program as well as those of another national stock exchange. Some companies opt to list on more than one exchange in order to further maximize trading opportunities and exposure to investors.

Unlisted Trading Privileges
There are approximately 2,000 securities that the BSE trades under Unlisted Trading Privileges (UTP). By the same token, BSE primary-listed companies may be traded by other exchanges through UTP. This competitive trading among markets provides added liquidity, increased opportunities for price improvement, and keeps costs competitive throughout the overall system.
