History

The club was formed in 1905. Stamford bridge had been constructed before the idea of forming a club had even been considered. The ground was offered to Fulham but they refused so the owners of the stadium decided to form a new club Chelsea FC. They applied for the Southern league but were refused entry and, were instead allowed into the Football league

The club spent heavily and quickly rose up the divisions. They reached a cup final in 1915.

The club got massive attendance breaking English national attendance records. Yet could not challenge consistently for the league.

In 1952, Ted Drake was appointed manager. In 54-55, Chelsea won the English national title under Drake. Chelsea were 12th in November, but secured the title with a game to spare after a 3-0 win v Sheffield Wednesday. The team were denied entry into the European cup by the football league, but did get to play in a UK championship friendly against Scottish champions Aberdeen. Chelsea lost the game.

Chelsea did not build on this and were relegated in 1962, but rebuilt quickly and were soon promoted, then back challenging for trophies. In 1965 the club even challenged for a domestic treble. The club missed out but did win their first league cup.

In 1967 the club reached another cup final but lost to Spurs.

In 1970 the club finally won the FA cup with famous cup final win over European cup semi finalists Leeds United.

The club now had one of each major domestic trophy. Then the next year won the European cup winners cup.

The club then overspent on stadium redevelopment, and hit financial problems. The rest of the seventies and eighties were a dismal era for Chelsea. Not only did they not challenge for trophies they lost much of their glamour, with hooliganism. Many fans growing up in the eighties naturally saw Chelsea as smaller than West Ham United, Luton and Watford, and not anywhere near the category of the big five.

In the eighties they were relegated twice and struggled in Division two.

Then the nineties saw Chelsea recover. With the financial backing of millionaire Harding, the club started to grow. In 1993 Hoddle was appointed manager of Chelsea, and they reached the FA cup final in his first year. They lost 4-0 to Manchester United. but were qualified for the cup winners cup.

The club reached the semi final of the cup winners cup. And the club was starting to buy in great players from Europe, admittedly players at the end of their career. The biggest coups were Weah, and Ruud Gullit. Gullit was signed in 1995. And when Hoddle left to manage England, Gullit was appointed boss in 1996. The manager had a superb debut year taking the club to sixth and an FA cup win.

The next year the manager took the club to 1998 semi final of the league cup and cup winners cup before being sacked, due to contract negotiations. Italian legend Vialli was appointed boss and he promptly won the 1998 league cup and cup winners cup, and reached the European cup for the first time due to being third in the league. The club were now operating a European style management system. Vialli was not responsible for buying players.

Chelsea were now seen as the third biggest club in the nation after Manchester United and Spurs northern derby rivals.

In 2000 the club won the FA cup again and reached the quarter final of the European cup. But they started the next year badly and Vialli was sacked and replaced by the more experienced Italian Ranieri. He was given time to rebuild the club, but the clubs debt were increasing.

In 2003 the club just managed to win their way into the champions league by finishing fourth. This was vital to Chelsea as it encouraged Russian Billionaire Roman Abramovich to buy the club. The billionaire plouged millions of pounds into the club turning them into the biggest in Europe. The club left Ranieri as manager for one year. He took the club up to second. But Mourinho, the European cup winning manger of Porto, was then appointed the manager of Chelsea. He took the club to their second league championship and a league cup in 2005. Going into 2006 the club looked certain to be champions. Yet European cup success was missed out on. Despite being favorites for the European cup in 2005, and 2006 the team were knocked out by Liverpool, and Barcelona.
