The UK government had a record of supporting privitisation, but the trend has given way to the idea of allowing each nation to decide their won issues. In 2004 the Department for International Development (DFID) launched a public consultation on aid conditionality. British NGOs claim this is in reaction to their pressure to stop UK aid being made conditional upon privatisation, trade liberalisation or any other macroeconomic conditions.
