The club was formed in 1878 as Newton Heath, a works team of the Lancashire and Yorkshire Railway. The name was changed to Manchester United in 1902 after a takeover saved them from going bankrupt. The club were founder members of the football alliance a rival to the football league in 1889, but joined the football league in 1892.
The club won their first league in 1908, their first cup in 1909 and charity shield in 1911, but they really took off under the appointment of the first of their two great managers, Busby in 1945.
During a quarter of a century spell as manager he took the club to become the biggest in England. With one European cup, 5 championships and two FA cups under his era. As well as setting up Man Utd's reputation as a club for developing youth players. They won the youth cup 5 times in a row, and in the fifties the teams youthful nature lead to them being labeled as the Busby Babes. 1958 Manchester United suffered one of their biggest tragedies when a plane carrying the team crashed while attempting take off in Munich. 8 players died and many players had to retire, or were never bale to reach the same level of quality they had shown before the crash. Many thought this team could have gone on to win the European cup.
Busby rebuilt the team, and won a European cup in 1969, then retired at the top that same year. From 1969 until 1986 Manchester United went through a frustrating era, chopping and changing managers, as they searched for someone who could win the league.
After Busby's leaving the team went through a barren spell. They could not win the league, while Liverpool grew into being the dominant club of English football. The rivalry between Liverpool and Manchester United is now arguably more intense than that with Manchester City. Liverpool dominated English football during this spell, they won the league 9 times from 1969 to 1986, and won 4 European cups, while Man Utd had only 3 FA cups, and were even relegated from division one for a year.
In 1986 they looked odds on to win the league then collapsed and watched as Liverpool won their first double.
Then in 1986 they appointed their second great manager, taking Fergie from Scottish side Aberdeen. He took time to rebuild the club. From 1986 until 1990 he faced pressure from fans, with humiliating 5-1 defeats to Manchester City, and with Liverpool still dominating winning two more leagues. But in 1990 Man Utd won the FA cup giving Fergie breathing space. The following year they won two European trophies the cup winners cup, and the super cup. In 1992 they challenged Leeds united for the league, and won the league cup.
Then in 1993 Manchester won their first championship for 26 years, and went onto dominate English football, until the arrival of Roman Abramovich at Chelsea, in 2003. Between 1993 and 2003 Fergie won 8 leagues, with 3 doubles, 1 treble, a European cup and 3 FA cups.
Manchester United now find it difficult to challenge the fortunes of Chelsea. But have still managed to win an FA cup and and league cup, since Roman Abramovich.
