Pele the story
Pele is ranked with Diego Maradona as one of the greatest football players of
all time.
Edson Arantes de Nascimento
Pele was born on the 23rd October 1940, to Jose Ramos do Naascimento (a football
player for Tres Coracoes and Mineiro) and Celeste, in the small town of Tres
Coracoes in Minas Gerias a state in Brazil.
His first family home was in what could be described as a poor part of the town.
The town of Bauru became a permanent home for Pele. Pele grew up playing football
in the Bauru street. Yet they had to make their own football due to the lack
of wealth. Pele wanted to be a pilot when he grew up, and genuinley thought
he would not become a football player.
When Pele was seven he got a job shining shoes. He sees shining shoes at a football
match at seven as one of his key memories.
Pele went to Ernesto Monte Primary School from the age of 8. About this type
he got the name Pele
Pele's first side was Santos. He started playing for the side at 15 . His debut
was against Corinthians with a goal in a 7-1 win on the Seventh of August 1956.
Pele only played for Santos once more that year. In 1957 Pele played for Santos
as a regular. Pele did not score for his first 9 games of 1957, but the slowly
Pele started to take off. Between March the 24th 1957 and the 7th of July 1957,
Pele played 23 times for Santos (and Santos /Vascos) and scored 22 times for
the club including 4 scores in one match against Lavras.
On the 7th of July 1957 Pele was selected to play for Brazil against Argentina.
The player scored on his international debut but the match was a defeat. Pele
continued to play for Santos as a regular and continued to score.
Pele was hoping to be selected for the Brazil world cup squad for the 1958 Sweden
tournament.
On the 4th of May 1958 Pele was selected to play for Brazil again, in a friendly
before the tournament and he played in a 5 - 1 win with 2 scores for himself.
He then played twice again against Bulgaria with a 4 - 0 win, and then 3-1 win
in which he scored twice.
Many still found it surprising when Pele was picked for the 1958 Brazil squad
to play in FIFA's greatest tournament of national sides, the World cup, to be
held in Sweden in 1958. Pele was still only a young player. Pele's selection
did cause controversy with some fans of Corinthians.
The Brazil side toured Italy before the tournament playing inter Milan and Fiorentina
but Pele did not
play in either match and was frustrated.
The other great Brazilian soccer PLAYERS of the era were Garricha, Djalma Santos
and Zito.
In the tournament itself Brazil first played against Austria and then England
but Pele did not play in either match.
Pele finally got his chance again against the USSR in the third group match
with a 2-0 win, but no scores. Although he has scored numerous times for the
international side Pele was still not making the waves in the tournament that
many expected of him. Yet against the Welsh in the quarter final Pele showed
what a key player he was to Brazil.
He scored the only and winning goal of the game to take Brazil through to the
semi final to play France. Brazil then won 5-2 in Stolkholm with a famous hatrick
from Pele. Then Brazil played the host of the tournament Sweden with another
empathic 5-2 win, with 2 scores from Pele, to give Brazil their first Soccer
championship of the planet.
The Brazil team were welcomed back as heroes.
Pele was injured for much of the 1962 tournament he played in group matches
against Czechoslovakia and Mexico but was unable to play in the knockout stages.
Brazil won the trophy with a 3-1 rematch against Czechoslovakia in the final.
Pele carried on playing.
In 1966 Pele was scored the first goal of the tournament in a 2-0 win over Bulagria,
but was unablke to play in the match against Hungary. Hungary became the first
side to beat Brazil in the tournament since 1954, Brazil then lost their final
group match 3-1 to Portugal, sending them out in the group stages.
1970 was probably Brazil's most glorious championship win. Regarded as the greatest
football side
In Pele's last championship. Brazil won a tough group with England, Romania
and the Czechoslovakians. Brazil won all 3 games. Pele played against England
and Romania in the groups stages with 2 scores against Romania. Then Brazil
won 4-2 against Peru in the quarter final. Followed by a 301 win over Uraquay
in the semi final. Then a dramatic 4-1 in over Italy with one score by Pele.
In his international carear he played many a team ranging from Scotland 1-1
and a 3-1 win in 1966, Belgium 5-0 1965, a FIFA select 2-1 1969, and his final
match for Brazil in a international match a 2-2 draw over Yugoslavia.
Pele played for Santos until 1974. When he moved to the New York Cosmos, with
other famous players in the North American Soccer league.
His record numer of scores in one game was 8 against Botafogo for Santos in
1964. In 1969 against Vasco Da Game he scored his 1000th goal.
Pele's last game was for a Brazil select against Flamengo in 1976.
His last goal was against Royal Antwerp in 3-1 defeat for the New York Cosmos
in 1976 at the age of 36.
