plasma TV
In 2006 the world's largest plasma TV maker Matsushita competes with South Korean electronics giants Samsung and LG. Samsung has already developed a 102-inch plasma screen TV but has not launched this onto the market. The price of the super-size screen has not been revealed, but Matsushita's existing 65-inch screen costs $7,500 in Japan. The arrival of this huge TV screen has been prompted by the growing size of LCD TVs, which are encroaching on the traditional territory of plasma screens and forcing firms like Matsushita to scale up their plasma displays. Japan's Matsushita is planning to sell the world's largest plasma screen TV by the end of this year. Matsushita, which owns the Panasonic brand, says it has already taken orders from the US for the 103-inch panel TVs. Only 20% of the customers for the monster screen will be TV viewers, Matsushita said. Businesses that need electronic billboards will account for many of the 5,000 units Matsushita hopes to sell every year.
In 2004 Sony denied reports it is to cease selling plasma televisions to concentrate
solely upon LCD (liquid crystal display) models. The Japanese electronics giant
said there was no truth in the newspaper claim, but analysts said it would make
sense for Sony. They point to the fact Sony does not actually make its own plasma
models and is struggling to stay competitive. Analysts say Sony would be better
off sticking to rival technology LCD. With plasma and LCD competing to be the
most popular flat television technology, plasma currently has the advantage
in that its screens can be made significantly larger. Yet Sharp, one of Sony's
television rivals, is already concentrating on LCD screens in the belief it
will eventually be able to produce models as large as those using plasma technology.
In 2004 a patent war has broke out between the world's two biggest makers of
plasma display panels, used in flat screen TVs and colour mobile phones.
Japanese firm Fujitsu has sued Samsung in a USA federal court, accusing the
South Korean group of infringing its plasma display panel (PDP) patents. Fujitsu's
lawsuit follows one filed by Samsung in California in February. Fujitsu produces
a quarter of the world's plasma display screens through Fujitsu Hitachi Plasma
Display Ltd, its 50% joint venture with Hitachi. It is suing Samsung SDI, which
is 20% owned by Samsung Electronics. Samsung SDI makes one fifth of the world's
PDPs. A Samsung spokesman said there "had been some dispute whether Fujitsu
claims are enforceable and we'll wait for the court's ruling". IT analysts
expect the popularity of TV sets with plasma display panels to make them one
of the fastest growing markets for consumer electronics this year. Both companies
are ratchetting up production.
In 2005 Consumer electronics giants Hitachi and Matshushita Electric are joining
forces to share and develop technology for flat screen televisions.
The tie-up comes as the world's top producers are having to contend with falling
prices and intense competition. The two Japanese companies will collaborate
in research & development, production, marketing and licensing. They said
the agreement would enable the two companies to expand the plasma display TV
market globally.
