Ryanair

An Irish airline with a HQ in Dublin, Ireland, although its biggest operational base is at London Stansted Airport. It is one of Europe's largest low cost carriers, operating more than 200 routes to 22 nations. Over the years it evolved to a profitable airline, running at margins by passing costs directly to customers. Ryanair is been characterised by rapid and continuing expansion, enabled by the deregulation of the air industry in Europe in 1997.

Low-cost airline Ryanair is charging passengers extra for checking in their baggage before flights. The Dublin based carrier said people with bags and cases would be charged £2.50 (3.50 euros) for every item of luggage checked in from 16 March 2006.

In 2005 Budget airline Ryanair announced a $1bn (£574m) expansion plan which would see Germany become the Irish carrier's second biggest base. Ryanair said it planned to increase the number of its aircraft operating at Frankfurt Hahn airport to 18 from six. The company said it aimed to carry more than eight million passengers a year from Hahn by 2012. Ryanair's plan would see the regional German airport overtake Dublin as its second-busiest base. London Stansted is currently Ryanair's main base of operations. The Frankfurt Hahn airport is about 120km (70 miles) from the city of Frankfurt.

Ryanair was founded in 1985 by an Irish businessman Tony Ryan. The airline began with a 15 seat Embraer turboprop aircraft flying between Waterford and London Gatwick with an aim of breaking the duopoly on London Ireland flights held by BA and Aer Lingus. In 1986 the company added a second route flying Dublin London - Luton in competition to the duopoly for the first time. Under partial EU Deregulation, airlines needed only one government to approve an intra EU service. Ireland refused ain order to protect Aer Lingus but Britain approved . With 2 routes and 2 planes, they carried 82,000 passengers in one year.

Ryanair has been accused of flying to airports far away from the cities they claim to serve. For example, the airline used to advertise a service to Malmö Sturup Airport, in Sweden, as "Copenhagen", Denmark.

EU deregulation of the air industry in Europe in 97 gave carriers from 1 EU nation the right to operate scheduled services between other EU states, and represented a major opportunity for Ryanair. After a successful flotation on the Dublin and NASDAQ Stock exchanges, the airline launched services to Stockholm, Oslo (Sandefjord Airport), Paris and Charleroi near Brussels. Flush with capital, the airline placed a massive USA$2 billion order for 45 new Boeing 737-800 series aircraft in 98.

In February 2006, Channel 4 broadcast a documentary as part of its Dispatches series, "Ryanair caught napping". Two undercover reporters obtained jobs as cabin crew based at Ryanair's operations at London Stansted Airport and secretly recorded a training programme, and cabin crew procedures. The documentary criticised Ryanair's training policies, security procedures, aircraft hygiene, and highlighted poor staff morale.

Ryanair serves more than 300 routes between 130 airports in 20 European nations and 3 in Morocco. Its main hub is London Stansted Airport, with 88 routes. Ryanair has other bases throughout Europe, at Charleroi Brussels South, Cork, Dublin, Frankfurt-Hahn, Girona, London Luton, Liverpool, Milan Orio al Serio, Pisa, Nottingham East Midlands, Glasgow Prestwick, Rome Ciampino, Shannon, Stockholm Skavsta and has announced a new base at Marseille Provence.

In 2006 Sweden's Prime Minister, Goran Persson, was suing Ryanair for using his face in an advert which asked whether it was "time to flee the country?" Mr Persson and former minister Laila Freivalds said the ads were offensive and their images were used without permission. The ads were published at a time when the government was under fire for its response to the Asian tsunami.

In 2006 Budget airline Ryanair reported a better-than-expected 12% rise in annual profits to 302m euros (£208m; $389m).
The rise in profits came despite a 74% increase in fuel costs to 462m euros as oil prices continued to climb. Ryanair said it had attracted custom by not levying a fuel surcharge, unlike other airlines. Passenger numbers for the year grew by 26% to 35 million.

In 2005 a disability group is calling for a boycott of budget airline Ryanair after a group of blind and partially-sighted passengers was ordered off a flight.
The group of nine, from Norwich, were told to get off the plane at Stansted because the flight was over its quota for disabled people. Scope, a leading UK disability charity, urged disabled and non-disabled people to blacklist Ryanair.

Budget airline Ryanair banned its staff from charging their phones at work, saying it is an inappropriate use of office time.
