World's first fully automated trading, clearing and settlement system (est.1995)

The Swiss cash market for securities is organised by SWX and supervised by the Swiss Federal Banking Commission (FBC). With the exception of shares included in the SMI® index, all other SWX-listed securities - as well as foreign companies with secondary listings on SWX - are traded in this market. Day to day dealings on SWX, in keeping with the principle of self-regulation, are supervised by the Surveillance & Enforcement department (SVE) of SWX

The SWX is subject to Swiss law. The Federal Act on Stock Exchanges and Securities Trading (SESTA) prescribes the concept of self-regulation, which obligates the SWX to meet international standards in its regulatory activities. The SWX itself is supervised by the Swiss Federal Banking Commission (SFBC).

The market data emanating from the SWX Swiss Exchange and virt-x are marketed by SWX and EXFEED as standardised or individually tailored information products.

The SWX Swiss Exchange organises, operates and regulates the main aspects of Switzerland's capital market. The commercial activities of the SWX encompass the following business fields: cash market operations, information products, the development and operation of fully electronic trading platforms, and the admission of securities to trading on the Exchange.

The SWX is one of the world's most technologically advanced securities exchanges. Firmly rooted in Switzerland's strong financial centre, the SWX resolutely pursues a strategy focused on internationality. The shares traded on SWX are mainly held in the Swiss based accounts of domestic and international investors.

Other products traded on the SWX Platform are bonds (CHF-denominated bonds as well as international bonds), traditional investments, Exchange Traded Funds (ETFs, known as exchange-traded index funds) and non-standardised derivatives. In terms of turnover, the SWX Swiss Exchange operates Europe's largest market segment for listed and exchange-traded warrants. The warrants market on the SWX is distinguished by its wide range of products and favourable listing conditions, not to mention its ability to respond quickly and flexibly to new investor needs.

The SWX Swiss Exchange performs another key function by maintaining the regulatory framework for securities issuance and trading, as well as monitoring and enforcing compliance with these regulations. The SWX, whose legal form is that of an association, represents the interests of Switzerland's financial marketplace while defending the interests of all market participants.

In 2004 Frankfurt's stock exchange Deutsche Boerse has had its hopes for expansion dashed after Zurich's SWX rejected an invitation to merger talks.
Deutsche Boerse approached its Swiss counterpart in July, hoping for "deeper co-operation," which raised hopes that the two could be about to be joined.
