Theatre dance and music schooling in the UK

Sylvia Young Theatre School is a famous stage school, in Marylebone, London. The schools founder and Principal is Dame Sylvia Young.

The school was established in 1981 on Dury Lane, but due to expansion it moved to its current premises in 1983. Students either attend full-time with board, saturday or evening classes or holiday school.

The school admits boys and girls from the ages of 10 through to 16. The school provides a clear focus on performing arts (drama, singing and dancing), but full-time students receive education and examination in all areas of the GCSE curriculum. Entry to the school is gained by audition in drama, singing and dance, with an interview and written assessment.

The London School of Musical Theatre (LSMT) is based in Borough Road, Southwark, south London, England. It was founded by Glenn Lee.

The school provides a full time intensive vocational training course over a year for those wishing to enter musical theatre. There is an emphasis on singing, but dance and drama are also included. Many students go on to West End shows.

The Bristol Old Vic is a theatre complex and company in the centre of Bristol, England. The complex includes the 1766 Theatre Royal, which claims to be the oldest continually-operating theatre in England, along with a 1970s studio theatre, offices and backstage facilites. It also incorporates the eighteenth-century Coopers' Hall as its foyer. The Theatre Royal is a grade I listed building, while the Coopers' Hall is grade II. The present company was established in 46 as an offshoot of the London Old Vic theatre. It is also affiliated with the Bristol Old Vic Theatre School, a well-regarded school for both actors and technicians.

The Army School of Bagpipe Music and Highland Drumming is a British Army training establishment providing instructions of Scottish bagpipe music to military pipers, drummers and pipe bands. Founded in 1910 as the Army School of Piping (later renamed the Army School of Bagpipe Music), the School is still located in Edinburgh, Scotland. Generally regarded as the smallest unit in the British Army, the School is now commanded by a Director who is a qualified army Pipe Major and who usually holds the rank of Captain or Major (usually commissioned from Warrant Officer rank on appointment). The Director is assisted by a Chief Instructor, who is the Senior Pipe Major of the British Army.

Chetham's School of Music, familiarly known as "Chets", is a specialist music school in Manchester. It was established in 1969 at the site of Chetham's Hospital, an orphanage founded by Humphrey Chetham in 1653. The school has more than 280 pupils, and the original 15th century college, built in 1421, is still in use.

The City of Edinburgh Music School is a state maintained music school in Edinburgh, Scotland. Founded as a Lothian Specialist Music School in 1980, it changed its name in 96 when Lothian Regional Council was dissolved into 4 separate unitary councils. It is a non residential school, and because it is funded by the Scottish Executive, charges no fees. Unlike residential music schools, pupils attend comprehensive schools for their academic classes: Flora Stevenson Primary and Broughton High School.

The Royal Welsh College of Music & Drama (Welsh: Coleg Brenhinol Cerdd a Drama Cymru) is a prestigious conservatoire located in Cardiff. It is a constituent college of the University of Wales.

The College was established in 1949 as Cardiff College of Music at Cardiff Castle, where its remains, but now in purpose-built accommodation within the castle grounds. It later changed its name to the Welsh College of Music & Drama before being awarded its Royal title in The Queen's Golden Jubilee in 2002, making it the sixth conservatoire to be awarded this title. The College's degrees have been awarded by the University of Wales, but it was not until 2004 that the College became part of the federal university.

Guildhall School of Music and Drama is a music and dramatic arts school which was founded in 1880 in the City of London, UK. The first Guildhall School was housed in an old warehouse in Aldermanbury, but these premises soon proved too small. A new purpose-built building in John Carpenter Street was designed by City Architect Sir Horace Jones and opened in December 1886.

Before 1935 it was known as the Guildhall School of Music. Since 77 it has been next to the Barbican Arts Centre in the Barbican Complex built in the 1960s – 70s.

The Royal College of Organists or RCO, based in Birmingham, England, is the UK's national body charged with promoting organ and choral music and overseeing musical education and training for organists and choral directors.

The College maintains the British Organ Library and provides internationally recognised examinations, diplomas and fellowships in organ-playing, choral directing and organ-teaching. The RCO was founded as the College of Organists in 1864 by Richard Limpus, the organist of St Michael's Cornhill in the City of London, and received its Royal Charter in 1893. From 1904 until 91 it was based in Kensington Gore in West London in a remarkable building designed by architect H H Cole. The Royal Academy of Music is a music school in London, and one of the leading music institutions in the world. It was founded by Lord Burghersh in 1822 and in 1830 was granted a Royal Charter The Royal College of Music is a prestigious music school located in Kensington, London.

Founded in 1882 as a successor to the National Training School for Music by the then-Prince of Wales (later Edward VII), the school opened in 1883 with George Grove as its director. It moved to its present location in the Albertopolis cultural quarter, next to Imperial College London and opposite the Royal Albert Hall in 1894. In the same year Hubert Parry became director, remaining until 1918.

The Yehudi Menuhin School is a specialist music school in Surrey, England. It was founded in 1963 by the famous violinist Yehudi Menuhin.

It educates about 60 boys and girls between the ages of 8 to 18, who all play at least one musical instrument (stringed instrument or piano) to an exceptionally high level. Academic subjects are also studied, but the emphasis is on developing performance skills in classical music.


St Mary's Music School is Scotland's specialist music school and the Choir School of St Mary's Episcopal Cathedral. The school provides education for children with special talent in music.

The Hampshire Specialist Music Course is offered by the Peter Symonds College, based in Winchester, Hampshire, UK.

It is designed for musically gifted young people who wish to focus on the study of music and on improving their musical performance, typically between the ages of 16-18. Those on the course often go on to study music at one of the UK's music colleges, or to study music at university, and then on to careers as professional musicians. Former students can now be found in virtually all of the UK's top orchestras. Many of those on the course play in the Hampshire County Youth Orchestra, and some even in the National Youth Orchestra, and the course also includes talented pianists and singers.
