Winnipeg Commodity Exchange is a derivatives market. Futures and options contracts are electronically traded in feed wheat, western barley and canola. Winnipeg Commodity Exchange Inc. does not trade stocks. The Exchange trades agricultural commodity futures contracts and options on futures contracts. WCE began existence as the Winnipeg Grain & Produce Exchange in 1887.
A futures contract is a standardized, exchange-traded, transferable obligation to buy or sell a specified quantity of the underlying item (eg-canola) within a specified futures period (the delivery month) at an agreed upon price. Standardization is the key difference between forward cash contracts and futures contracts. Forward contracts are specific agreements between two parties, where all of the elements of the contract are negotiated. In futures trading, traders buy or sell contracts to take or make delivery of a commodity at a future date (hence the name futures contracts).
