Gisele was born in the Brazilian village of Horizontina and lived in a large family with 5 sisters: Raquel, Graziela, Gabriela, Rafaela and Patrícia, who was born five minutes younger than Gisele, but is not an identical twin.

Forbes magazine declared Gisele as the best paid model of all time. Her personal fortune is valued in 150 million dollars, and she is on the Guinness Book of Records as "the world's richest supermodel".

Gisele wanted to be a professional volleyball player and even thought of becoming a member for Brazilian side, Sogipa.

She was discovered at the age 14 on a school trip to São Paulo; while eating a Big Mac she was scouted by a modeling agent.

A year before her sisters Patrícia and Gabriela and had taken a model course instructed by Dilson Stein, to "correct" posture, at their mother's insistance. This course was designed for teenagers aspiring to become models. In 94, Stein took Gisele to São Paulo for an opportunity to walk in a big city and to be evaluated by Brazilian Elite agents.

In 96 Gisele moved to New York to begin a modeling career, debuting at Fashion Week.

Along with winning the VH1/Vogue Model of the Year award in 99, she co hosted the ceremony in 2000 along with actor Cuba Gooding, Jr.. Vogue.
In 2000 she was only the 4th model to appear on the Rolling Stone magazine cover, when she was named "the most beautiful girl in the world".

Gisele appeared on the cover and in many magazines internationally, including: Vogue ELLE, Allure, The Face, Arena, Flare, Rolling Stone, Time, Vanity Fair, Forbes, Newsweek, Esquire, Veja, Caras, GQ and Marie Claire.
Some say Gisele appeared in more than 7,000 magazine covers around the world, the only woman who made more covers was Princess Diana.

Iin 1999 she became the prime choice of photographers, magazine editors, and fashion designers alike, as her face appeared on new ad campaigns for leading fashion houses such as Ralph Lauren.

Horizontina is a municipality and a city in Rio Grande do Sul, in south Brazil, with 18 046 habitants in a 2004 IBGE estimation. The first settlers were German, Italian and Polish immigrants who arrived in the region in 1927, though the city was created only in 1955. Nowadays, most of the inhabitants are of German-Brazilian descent. Gisele Bündchen was born in Três de Maio, a town in this municipality.
