magnetoresistive random-access memory Mram
A microchip that can store information like hard drives has been unveiled by USA based company Freescale. The chip, called magnetoresistive random-access memory (Mram), contains data by relying on magnetic properties rather than an electrical charge.
Freescale started commercial shipments of the 4-Mbit magneto resistive
random access memories (MRAM) on July the 10th 2006 ), with small volume sales
priced at $25 per chip.
Analysts say Freescale's move into volume MRAM production, after two years of
sampling, is a breakthrough.
The Freescale MRAM products are fast, with read and write times at 35-ns.
Some questioned whether MRAM's cell size can be competitive in the cost conscious
memory market, Tehrani said the 4-Mbit product has a 1.26 square micron cell
size in a 0.18-micron process. Freescale will skip the 0.13-micron generation
and jump next to the 90-nm node, where the cell size is 0.29 square microns.
That compares with about 1 square micron for 90-nm SRAMs, which use a six-transistor
structure per bit.
One analyst told the Associated Press news agency he chip was the most significant development in computer memory for a decade. The benefit of Mram chips is that they will hold information after power has been switched off. Mram chips can find their way to many different electronic devices.
Freescale has been producing the 4 megabit Mram chips at an Arizona factory for two months to build up stock. A number of chip makers have pursued the technology for a decade, including IBM, but Freescale is the first to offer a chip with practical usage for many of today's devices.
