The town of Hagi in south western Japan (population ,50,000) on the North coast of the Yamaguchi prefecture, formerly Choshu. The province is the south western tip of the main island of Japan, Honshu Island. The town is an historic city, considered of major importance in the development of Japan from the nineteenth century.

Satsuma is one of the main provinces that rose in the 19th century in opposition to the Tokugawa shogunate, that once ran Japan from the 17th century. The province had large represenatation in the restoration.
The province is now part of Kagoshima. The province lies on south of the the 3rd largest island of Japan, Kyushu. Kyushu is the southerly island if the 3 largest islands of Japan.
One of the most famous cities of Satsuma is the city of Kagoshima, (the birthplace of Matsukata Masayoshia) a city of 500,000 a bay city, with hot weather and an impressive strata volcano. Kagoshima is an advanced cosmopolitan city, with an international airport. In 1549 Japan had its first meeting with Christians in Kagoshima. The Spanish missionary Francis Xavier arrived in Kagoshima.

until the transfer of the government to Edo in 1868 at the time of the Imperial
Restoration.
Kyoto is the only large Japanese city still with much pre-war buildings, such as machiya. Yet modernization is stripping away the old architecture.
