In the UK, methamphetamine was classified as a Class B drug under the Misuse of Drugs Act 1971. The maximum penalty for possession is five years imprisonment, and the maximum penalty for supplying is 14 years. If methamphetamine (or any other Class B drug) is prepared for injection, then it is re-classified as a Class A drug. The maximum penalty for such possession is seven years imprisonment, and maximum penalty for supplying is life imprisonment.

In 2006, it was announced that methamphetamine is to be reclassified as a Class A drug and has been reclassed as such, following a recommendation made by the Advisory Council on the Misuse of Drugs.
