The peony or paeony (Paeonia) is the one genus in the flowering plant family Paeoniaceae. Most are herbaceous perennials 0.5 – 1.5 metres tall, but some are woody shrubs up to two to three m tall. They produce large, often fragrant flowers in shades of red to white or yellow in late spring and early summer. They are native to Asia, southern Europe and western North America. In the past, Peonies were classified as a tribe of the Ranunculaceae, along with Helleboreae and Anemoneae.

'Bowl of Beauty' is the classic variety of peony. It has very large pink flowers with ruffled, creamy white centres in early summer. It is a stunning cut flower.

Avoid planting your peony too deeply and be patient with it as it can take a few years to settle in before it begins to flower.
