Wi-Fi uses both single carrier direct sequence spread spectrum radio technology, part of the larger family of spread spectrum systems and multi-carrier OFDM radio technology. Unlicensed spread spectrum was authorized by the Federal Communications Commission in 85 and the FCC regulations were copied with some changes in many other nations enabling use of this technology in all major nations. The regulations enabled the development of Wi-Fi, its onetime competitor HomeRF, and Bluetooth.

Wifi is a brand licensed by the Wifi Alliance to describe an underlying technology of wireless local area networks (WLAN) based on the IEEE 802.11 specifications.WiFi stands for wireless fidelity.

Wifi was intended for mobile computing devices, such as laptops, in LANs, but is often used for increasingly more applications, including Internet and VoIP phone access, gaming, and connectivity of consumer electronics such as televisions and DVD players. There are more standards in development to allow Wi Fi's to be used by cars in highways in support of an ITS to increase safety, gather statistics, and enable mobile commerce IEEE 802.11p.

A person with a Wifi device, such as computer, telephone, or personal digital assistant can connect via the Internet when in proximity of an access point. The region covered by one or several access points is called a hotspot. Hotspots can range from a single room to many square miles of overlapping hotspots. Wifi can also be used to create a Wireless mesh network. Both architectures are used in Wireless community network, municipal wireless networks like Wireless Philadelphia, and metro-scale networks like M-Taipei.

Wifi also allows connectivity in peer to peer mode, which enables devices to connect directly with each other. This connectivity mode is useful in consumer electronics and gaming applications.

When the technology was first commercialized there were many problems because consumers could not be sure that products from different vendors would work together. The Wifi Alliance began as a community to solve this issue so as to address the needs of the end user and allow the technology to mature. The Alliance created another brand "Wifi CERTIFIED" to denote products are interoperable with other products displaying the "Wifi CERTIFIED" brand.

Many people who rip CDs onto a computer use formats such as MP3, AAC or WMA, all of which compress audio, losing quality in the process.

Digital music files stored on a computer can be streamed over a wi fi network to Transporter, which plugs into an amplifer and speakers.
