Newport Beach, incorporated in 1906, is a city in Orange County, California, 10 miles south of downtown Santa Ana.
In 1870 a steamer named The Vaquero made its first trip to a marshy lagoon for trading. Ranch owners in the Lower Bay decided from then on that the area should be called Newport.
In 1905 city development increased when Pacific Electric Railroad established a southern terminus in Newport connecting the beach with downtown Los Angeles. In 1906 with a population of 206 citizens, the scattered settlements were incorporated as the City of Newport Beach.
Newport Beach extends in elevation from sea level to the 1161 ft summit of Signal Peak in the San Joaquin Hills, but the official elevation is 25 feet above sea level
The city is bordered to the west by Huntington Beach at the Santa Ana River, on the north side by Costa Mesa, John Wayne Airport, and Irvine (including UC Irvine), and on the east side by Crystal Cove State Park.
Newport Coast is an affluent, new community south of the main body of Newport Beach. A variety of home types are available in the community from small studio apartments to ocean view mansions occupied by well known celebrities.
Areas of Newport Beach include Corona del Mar, Balboa Island, Newport Coast, San Joaquin Hills, and Balboa Peninsula (also known as Balboa).
The Upper Newport Bay was carved out by the prehistoric flow of the Santa Ana River. It feeds the delta that is the Back Bay, and eventually joins Lower Newport Bay, commonly referred to as Newport Harbor. The Lower Bay includes Balboa Island, Bay Island, Harbor Island, Lido Isle and Linda Isle.
The Balboa Pavilion in Newport Beach, Orange County, California, is a state landmark. Established on July 1, 1906, the Balboa Pavilion played a prominent role in the development of Newport Beach by attracting real estate buyers to an area formerly designated as swamp and overflow land.
The Balboa Pavilion is one of California's last surviving waterfront recreational pavilions from the turn of the century. The Pavilion continues to serve the public today as a marine recreational facility and is Newport Beachs most famous landmark, as well as its oldest standing building.
The San Joaquin Hills are a set of low hills in coastal Orange County, California. They extend in a northwest-southeast direction, starting in the northwest in Newport Beach at the southern edge of the Los Angeles Basin, and extending southeast to San Juan Capistrano. Named summits in the San Joaquin Hills include (from north to south) French Hill in Turtle Rock, Irvine; Signal Peak and Pelican Hill, both of which are near the Newport Coast neighborhood of Newport Beach; Temple Hill in Laguna Beach, more commonly known as "Top of the World" after the neighborhood situated on its peak; and Niguel Hill in Laguna Niguel. A fault line, the San Joaquin Hills blind thrust, lies eight miles below the hills. Scientists have suggested that the San Joaquin Hills have been formed by uplift from this fault.
Huntington
Beach is a seaside city in Orange County in southern California, United States.
It is known for its long 8.5 miles beach, mild climate, and excellent surfing.
The waves are a unique natural effect caused by edge-diffraction of ocean swells
by the island of Catalina, and waves from distant hurricanes. Because of the curve
of the coastline at Huntington Beach, the local beach actually faces southwest.
In summer, the southwest-facing beach often has very strong surf generally referred
to as a south swell. South swells can be generated from either (winter) storms
originating in the southern Pacific Ocean off New Zealand or from hurricanes off
the Mexican coast or a combination of both.
