New Zealand is an island country in the south-western Pacific Ocean comprising two main landmasses, (the North Island and the South Island,) and numerous smaller islands, most notably Stewart Island/Rakiura and the Chatham Islands. The indigenous Ma-ori named New Zealand Aotearoa, commonly translated as The Land of the Long White Cloud. The Realm of New Zealand also includes the Cook Islands and Niue (self-governing but in free association); Tokelau; and the Ross Dependency (New Zealand's territorial claim in Antarctica).

New Zealand is notable for its geographic isolation, situated about 2000 km southeast of Australia across the Tasman Sea, and its closest neighbours to the north are New Caledonia, Fiji and Tonga. During its long isolation New Zealand developed a distinctive fauna dominated by birds, a number of which became extinct after the arrival of humans and the mammals they introduced.

The history of New Zealand dates back at least 700 years to when it was discovered and settled by Polynesians, who developed a distinct Ma-ori culture centred on kinship links and land. The first European explorer came to New Zealand in 1642. From the late 18th century, the country was regularly visited by explorers and other sailors, missionaries, traders and adventurers. European settlement increased through the early decades of the nineteenth century, with numerous trading stations established, especially in the North. The first full-blooded European infant in the territory, Thomas King, was born in 1815 in the Bay of Islands. Many Europeans bought land from Ma-ori, but misunderstanding and different concepts of land ownership led to conflict and bitterness. In 1839, the New Zealand Company announced plans to buy large tracts of land and establish colonies in New Zealand. This alarmed the missionaries, who called for British control of European settlers in New Zealand. In 1840 the Treaty of Waitangi was signed between the British Crown and various Ma-ori chiefs, bringing New Zealand into the British Empire and giving Ma-ori equal rights with British citizens. There was extensive European and some Asian settlement throughout the rest of the century. War and the imposition of a European economic and legal system led to most of New Zealand's land passing from Ma-ori to Pa-keha- (European) ownership, and most Ma-ori subsequently became impoverished. From the 1890s the New Zealand parliament enacted a number of progressive initiatives, including women's suffrage and old age pensions. From the 1930s the economy was highly regulated and an extensive welfare state was developed. Meanwhile, Ma-ori culture underwent a renaissance, and from the 1950s Ma-ori began moving to the cities in large numbers. This led to the development of a Ma-ori protest movement which in turn led to greater recognition of the Treaty of Waitangi in the late twentieth century.

The South Island is the largest land mass and contains about one quarter of the New Zealand population. The island is divided along its length by the Southern Alps, the highest peak of which is Aoraki/Mount Cook at 3754 metres (12,316 ft). There are eighteen peaks of more than 3000 metres (9800 ft) in the South Island. The east side of the island is home to the Canterbury Plains while the West Coast is famous for its rough coastlines, very high proportion of native bush, and Fox and Franz Josef Glaciers.

The North Island is less mountainous than the South, but is marked by volcanism. The island's tallest mountain, Mount Ruapehu (2797 m / 9176 ft), is an active cone volcano. Lake Taupo is situated near the centre of the North Island and is the largest lake by surface area in the country. The lake lies in a caldera created following a large eruption.

The South Island is the larger of the two major islands of New Zealand, the other being the more populous North Island. The Ma-ori name for the South Island, Te Wai Pounamu, meaning "The Water/s of Greenstone" (greenstone being jade), possibly evolved from Te Wa-hi Pounamu which means "The Place Of Greenstone". The island is also known as Te Waka a Ma-ui which means "Ma-ui's Canoe".

The South Island is often called "the Mainland". Today this expression is used humorously, although still with pride by "Mainlanders", since while it is a somewhat larger landmass than the North Island, only about a quarter of New Zealand's four million inhabitants live in the South Island. However, in the early stages of European (Pa-keha-) settlement of the country, the South Island was pre-eminent, with the majority of the European population and wealth focussed there due to gold rushes. It was not until the early 20th century that the North Island population overtook the South, with 56% of the population living in the North in 1911. In Ma-ori legend, the South Island existed first, as the boat of Maui, while the North Island was the fish that he caught. However, the South Island has never been the main site of Ma-ori population.

The North Island is one of the two main islands of New Zealand, the other being the South Island. The island is 113,729 square km in area, making it the world's 14th-largest island.

Several important cities are in the North Island, notably New Zealand's largest city, Auckland, and Wellington, the capital, located at the southern extremity of the island. According to Ma-ori mythology, the North and South Islands of New Zealand arose through the actions of the demigod Ma-ui. Ma-ui and his brothers were fishing from their canoe (the South Island) when he caught a great fish and pulled it from the sea. While he was not looking his brothers fought over the fish and chopped it up. This great fish became the North Island and thus the Ma-ori name for the North Island is Te Ika-a-Ma-ui (The Fish of Ma-ui). The mountains and valleys are said to have been formed as a result of Ma-ui's brothers' hacking at the fish.

Wellington is the capital of New Zealand, situated at the southwestern tip of the North Island between Cook Strait and the Rimutaka Range. The Wellington Urban Area is the major population centre of the southern North Island.
