Ocean
City is a city in Cape May County, New Jersey, United States. It is the principal
city of the Ocean City Metropolitan Statistical Area which encompasses all of
Cape May County.
Ocean City was originally formed as a borough by an Act of
the New Jersey Legislature on May 3, 1884, from portions of Upper Township, based
on the results of a referendum held on April 30, 1884, and was reincorporated
as a borough on March 31, 1890. Ocean City was incorporated as a city, its current
type of government, on March 25, 1897.
Ocean City is known as a family seaside resort that prohibited the sales of alcoholic beverages within its limits in a law passed in 1879.
Ocean City is a barrier island with bridge connections to Upper Township, Atlantic County, Somers Point, and Strathmere. The Eastern side of Ocean City borders the Atlantic Ocean, while the Western side faces the Great Egg Harbor.
The Great Egg Harbor River (known locally as the Great Egg) is a river, approximately 50 mi ) long, in southern New Jersey in the United States. It is one of the major rivers that transverse the largely pristine Pinelands, draining of the wetlands into the Atlantic Ocean at Great Egg Harbor, from which it takes its name. Longport neighbors Margate City, and shares Absecon Island with Ventnor City as well as Atlantic City.
Longport is located on the southwest corner of 8.1-mile long Absecon Island, along with Margate City, Ventnor City and Atlantic City to the northeast.
Streets at the southern end of the borough start at 11th Street, as the ten streets below it have been washed out on the delicate barrier island.
Somers Point is a city in Atlantic County, New Jersey, United States. Somers Point was once known as the Somers Plantation and its settlement started around 1693. Somers Point was originally incorporated as a borough by an Act of the New Jersey Legislature on April 24, 1886, from portions of Egg Harbor Township, based on the results of a referendum held five days earlier. The borough was reincorporated on April 2, 1890, based on the previous day's referendum. Somers Point was incorporated as a city on April 9, 1902, from all of Somers Point borough and additional portions of Egg Harbor Township
Strathmere was originally called just Corson's Inlet. The town of Corson's Inlet was annexed to Upper Township in 1905. It was renamed Strathmere around 1912.
