Puducherry is a Union Territory of India. It is a former French colony, consisting of four non-contiguous enclaves, or districts, and named after the largest, Pondicherry.
Pondicherry consists of four unconnected districts: Pondicherry, Karaikal, and Yanam on the Bay of Bengal and Mahé on the Arabian Sea. Puducherry (Pondicherry) and Karaikal are by far the larger ones, and are both enclaves of Tamil Nadu. Yanam and Mahé are enclaves of Andhra Pradesh and Kerala, respectively.
Yanam or Yanaon is a town in the Union territory of Pondicherry; it is located in Yanam district. Yanam has some 300 years of history and is well known as French Yanam even now although it was transferred to India in 1954. It forms a 30 km² enclave in the district of East Godavari in Andhra Pradesh. Yanam was a unique blend of French and Telugu culture prevailing Andhra Pradesh. During French rule, Tuesday market (mangalavaram santa) at Yanam was very popular among nearby Telugu people in Madras Presidency who used to visit in order to buy foreign and smuggled goods. The district lies in the delta of Godavari River, the town is situated where the river meets its tributary Koringa River (Coringa River), 9 kilometres from the Bay of Bengal in the Coromandel coast.
Karaikal (also Karikal or Karaikkal) is a city and a municipality in Karaikal district in the Indian Union Territory of Puducherry.Several explanations are offered for the word 'Karaikal'. The imperial Gazetteer gives it the meaning 'fish pass'. According to Julien vinson the town is said to have known as Karaigiri in Sanskrit. However, the name Karaikal is no doubt a combination of two words 'Karai' and 'Kal'. Both the words Karai and 'Kal' have several meanings, of which the more acceptable ones are 'lime mix' and 'canal' respectively. Hence it has been suggested that the name may mean a canal built of lime mix. However, no trace of such a canal is evident now. Before 1739 Karaikal was under the regime and control of Raja Pratap Singh of Tanjore.
Puducherry (formerly: Pondycherry, French: Pondichéry) is a city and a municipality in Puducherry District in the Indian union territory of Puducherry. The city is protected against the sea by a 1.25 mile (2-kilometer) long seawall, first completed by the French in 1735, which reaches a height of 27 feet above sea level. A weather-beaten cement plaque with the year 1952 is still visible along a section of the seawall. The seawall is protected from the direct onslaught of waves by rows of granite boulders which are reinforced every year to stop erosion. Whenever gaps appear or the stones sink into the sand, the Government adds more boulders to keep it strong. The boulders, some weighing up to a ton, are weathered black and brown.
