A semi autonomous territory of the US located in the north east of the Caribbean, it is east of the Dominican Republic and west of the Virgin Islands. The official languages of the commonwealth are Spanish and English. The fact that visitors from the US do not need a passport to enter Puerto Rico attracts a large number of tourists from the mainland United States each year. Other groups of tourists that visit Puerto Rico in large numbers include Mexicans, Dominicans, Venezuelan, Spaniards, French and Asian tourists.

Tourism is a important component of Puerto Rican economy supplying an approximate $1.8 billion. In 1999, an estimated 5 million tourists visited the island, most from the US. Nearly a 1/3 of these were cruise ship passengers. A steady increase in hotel registrations since 1998 and the construction of new hotels and new tourism projects, such as the Puerto Rico Convention Center, indicate the current strength of the tourist industry.

Located in the tropics, Puerto Rico enjoys an average temperature of 82.4 °F throughout the year. The temperature does not change drastically with a change in season. The temperature in the south is usually a few degrees higher than the north and temperatures in the central interior mountains are always cooler than the rest of the island. Hurricane season spans June to November. The all-time low in Puerto Rico has been 40 °F, registered in Aibonito.

Puerto Rico has 17 lakes, all man made, and more than 50 rivers, most originating in the Cordillera Central. Rivers in the northern region of the island are typically longer and of higher water flow rates than those of the south, since the south receives less rain than the central and northern regions.
