San Francisco International Airport is a major international airport located 13 miles south of downtown San Francisco, California, United States, adjacent to the cities of Millbrae and San Bruno in unincorporated San Mateo County. It is often referred to as SFO. The airport has flights to destinations throughout the Americas and is a major gateway to Europe, Asia, and Australasia. The airport was first opened on May 7, 1927 on 150 acres (607,000 m²) of cow pasture. The land was leased from prominent local landowner Ogden L. Mills, (who in turn had leased it from his grandfather Darius O. Mills) and was named Mills Field Municipal Airport. It remained Mills Field until 1931, when it was renamed San Francisco Municipal Airport. "Municipal" was replaced by "International" in 1955.

The U.S. Weather Bureau began keeping weather observations at Mills Field in May 1927. The weather records have continued under the National Weather Service, which maintained the Bay Area forecast office in the airport's control tower building until forecasting was moved to Redwood City. Although not the official weather observation site for San Francisco (with the official site existing in Duboce Park), data from SFO's automated weather station often appears as belonging to "San Francisco" in media sources outside of the Bay Area.

Norman Y. Mineta San José International Airport is a city-owned public-use airport serving the city of San José[4] in Santa Clara County, California, United States. It is located two nautical miles northwest of Downtown San Jose. In 1939, Ernie Renzel, a wholesale grocer and future mayor of San Jose, led a group negotiated an option to purchase of 483 acres (1.95 km2) of the Stockton Ranch from the Crocker family, to be the site of San Jose's airport. Renzel led the effort to pass a bond measure to pay for the land in 1940. In 1945, test pilot James Nissen leased about 16 acres (65,000 m2) of this land to build a runway, hangar, and office building for a flight school. When the city of San Jose decided to develop a municipal airport, Nissen sold his share of the aviation business and became San Jose's first airport manager. Both Renzel and Nissen were instrumental in the development of San Jose Municipal Airport over the next few decades, culminating with the opening of what is now Terminal C in 1965.

Oakland International Airport also known as Metropolitan Oakland International Airport, is a public airport located ten miles south of the central business district of Oakland, a city in Alameda County, California, United States. It is owned by the Port of Oakland. Construction of the airport began in 1927, and the airport was dedicated by Charles Lindbergh that September. In its early days, Oakland was the departing point of several historic flights, including Charles Kingsford Smith's historic US-Australia flight in 1928, and Amelia Earhart's final flight in 1937. Boeing Air Transport (a predecessor of United Airlines) began scheduled flights to Oakland in December 1927. It was joined by Trans World Airlines in 1932.

Hamilton Air Force Base was a former United States Air Force base located along the northern shore of San Francisco Bay, south of Novato, California. Hamilton Airfield was named for First Lieutenant Lloyd Andrew Hamilton of the 17th Aero Squadron, awarded the Distinguished Service Cross for heroism at Varssonaore, Belgium, in leading a low level bombing attack on a German airdrome 30 miles behind enemy lines on August 13, 1918. Thirteen days later Hamilton died in action near Lagnicourt, France.

San Carlos Airport ( is a small general aviation airport located two miles northeast of the central business district (CBD) of San Carlos, off U.S. Route 101 in San Mateo County, California, USA. Adjacent to the airport is the Hiller Air Museum. The FAA's National Plan of Integrated Airport Systems (NPIAS) classifies San Carlos as an important reliever airport for San Francisco International Airport.

Buchanan Field Airport is located in Concord, California, USA, 27 nautical miles northeast of San Francisco International Airport, in Contra Costa County. In 1942 Contra Costa County, California purchased land to build an airport in Central County for $88,000. The airport was being developed by the County when World War II broke-out and the United States Army Air Forces Fourth Air Force expropriated the site. The Army added additional land and built the airport facilities. They also built a training base for pilots and the base was known as Concord Army Airfeld.
