In 1776, the Spanish settled the tip of the peninsula, establishing a fort at the Golden Gate and a mission named for Francis of Assisi. The California Gold Rush in 1848 propelled the city into a period of rapid growth, transforming it into the largest city on the West Coast at the time. After being devastated by the 1906 earthquake and fire, San Francisco was quickly rebuilt, hosting the Panama-Pacific International Exposition nine years later. During World War II, San Francisco was the send-off point for many soldiers to the Pacific Theater. After the war, the confluence of returning servicemen, massive immigration. San Francisco is a popular international tourist destination famous for its landmarks, including the Golden Gate Bridge, Alcatraz Island, the cable cars, Coit Tower, and Chinatown, its steep rolling hills, and its eclectic mix of Victorian and modern architecture. The city is also known for its diverse, cosmopolitan population, including large and long-established Asian American and LGBT communities.

The Golden Gate Bridge is a suspension bridge spanning the Golden Gate, the opening of the San Francisco Bay onto the Pacific Ocean. As part of both U.S. Route 101 and State Route 1, it connects the city of San Francisco on the northern tip of the San Francisco Peninsula to Marin County. The Golden Gate Bridge had the longest suspension bridge span in the world when it was completed in 1937, and has become an internationally recognized symbol of San Francisco and California. Since its completion, the span length has been surpassed by eight other bridges.

Alcatraz Island, sometimes informally referred to as simply Alcatraz or locally as the Rock, is a small island located in the middle of San Francisco Bay in California, United States. It served as a lighthouse, then a military fortification, then a military prison followed by a federal prison until 1963. It became a national recreation area in 1972 and received landmarking designations in 1976 and 1986.

Today, the island is a historic site operated by the National Park Service as part of the Golden Gate National Recreation Area and is open to tours. Visitors can reach the island by ferry ride from Pier 33, near Fisherman's Wharf in San Francisco.

oit Tower was built atop Telegraph Hill in 1933 at the bequest of Lillie Hitchcock Coit to beautify the City of San Francisco.[citation needed] Lillie bequeathed one-third of her estate to the City of San Francisco "to be expended in an appropriate manner for the purpose of adding to the beauty of the city which I have always loved" .

Contrary to popular opinion, the tower was not designed to resemble a fire hose nozzle. This belief persists in part because of Lillie Hitchcock Coit's affinity with the San Francisco fire fighters of the day, in particular with Knickerbocker Engine Company Number 5. Although the architects claimed to have no design precedent in mind, during this time Europe saw the construction of aesthetically designed power stations that could be claimed as prototypes (e.g.: Battersea Power Station).

Chinatown is located in downtown San Francisco, and overlaps five Postal ZIP Codes. Often mistaken for a smaller, pre-1950's boundary, the current demarcation is roughly Montgomery Street and The City's Financial District in the East, Union Street and North Beach in the North all the way to its Northernmost point from the intersection of Jones Street and Lombard Stree in Russian Hill to Lombard Street and Grant Avenue in Telegraph Hill. It is here where important community fixtures are located, such as Yick Wo Elementary School, and City College of San Franciso's Chinatown-North Beach Campus. The Southeast is bounded by Bush Street with Union Square. It stretches as far westward all the way to Larkin Street in Nob Hill. It is here on the Larkin-Hyde-Leavenworth corridors that businesses and organizations cater to the needs of many low-income Asian immigrants. This part of the neighborhood is centered around the Chinatown Community Development Center on Larkin and Pine Streets (1303 Larkin St.), and the Chinatown Youth Center on nearby Post and Larkin Streets (1038 Post St.). It is within this area that Chinatown's Southermost boundary is defined by a stretch of Eddy Street between Polk Street and Jones. More than just a tourist destination of over 500 restaurants and shops, San Francisco's Chinatown is also North America's most densely-populated neighborhood. It is home to some people of Chinese descent, and continues to expand steadily in all directions. In a city where Chinese-Americans account for nearly 30 percent of its inhabitants, it is often difficult to tell where Chinatown ends and another district begins. "Chinatown, until recently contained from Bush to Broadway, and from Kearny to Powell, now crosses over into North Beach, and up Russian and Nob Hills." Frances Gendlin, Culture Shock!
