Santa Monica is a coastal city in western Los Angeles County, California, USA. Situated on Santa Monica Bay of the Pacific Ocean, it is completely surrounded by the City of Los Angeles, Pacific Palisades and Brentwood on the north, West Los Angeles and Mar Vista on the east, and Venice on the south.

Ocean Avenue is a road in Santa Monica, California that starts at the residential Adelaide Drive on the north end of Santa Monica and ends at Pico Boulevard. Ocean Avenue is the westernmost street in Santa Monica, and for most of its course it runs parallel to the Palisades Park, whose bluffs overlook the Pacific Coast Highway and Santa Monica State Beach. Many major east-west arterial roads such as Wilshire Boulevard, Santa Monica Boulevard and Pico Boulevard begin their western ends on Ocean Avenue. Past Pico, Ocean turns into Neilson Way. After Neilson Way hits Venice Beach the street becomes Pacific Avenue, which ends in Marina del Rey.
The city rests on a mostly flat slope that angles down towards Ocean Avenue and towards the south. High bluffs separate the north side of the city from the beaches.
The western and northwestern border of Santa Monica, California is the 3 mile limit in Santa Monica Bay and bordered by various districts of Los Angeles on its other sides: the eastern border is Brentwood north of Wilshire Boulevard and West Los Angeles south of Wilshire, the northeastern border is Sunset Boulevard, the southwestern border is Venice Beach and the southern border is with West Los Angeles and Mar Vista.
