Sea Isle City is a city in Cape May County, New Jersey, United States. It is part of the Ocean City Metropolitan Statistical Area. Sea Isle City is located on Ludlam Island, which also contains part of Dennis Township.
Sea Isle City was originally incorporated as a borough on May 22, 1882, from portions of Dennis Township, based on the results of a referendum held six days earlier. The borough was reincorporated on March 31, 1890. On April 20, 1907, the area was reincorporated as the City of Sea Isle City, based on the results of a referendum held on April 30, 1907.
Ludlam Island is a barrier island in southern New Jersey, on which Sea Isle City, and Strathmere, a part of Upper Township are located.
Joseph Ludlam purchased the island in the late 1600s, and grazed cows and sheep on it. In the 1880s, developer Charles K. Landis founded the City of Sea Isle on the island.
Ludlam's Beach Lighthouse was constructed in 1885, and was built after Charles K. Landis requested a light because of several shipwrecks off the island. The light was an L-shaped, two-story, structure with a square light tower on top, located at 31st Street and the Boardwalk until 1924. In 1923, a fire was started when the keeper's dog knocked over a kerosene lantern, destroying the roof and the light.
Sea Isle City borders Upper Township, Dennis Township, Middle Township, Avalon Borough, and the Atlantic Ocean.
Cape May County is the southernmost county in the U.S. state of New Jersey. A large ammount of Cape May County's industry is tourism, due to its beaches and location between the Delaware Bay and the Atlantic Ocean.
